Happy Flag Day! The US flag was first adopted in 1777 and continues to symbolize our Nation’s strength, unity, and enduring spirit. Today, as we reflect on the significance of the red, white, and blue, we extend our deepest gratitude to the men and women in uniform, their families, and all who support our armed forces, both past and present. Thank you for your dedication and service to our great Nation. #SHR #FlagDay

A recipe for unhappiness: fusing your identity with the military. Because what happens to your sense of self when you separate? I’ve talked to a lot of folks who struggle with this. They’ve built their identity around their achievements and their strengths in this one particular context. But the harsh reality is - what worked for them in the military won’t necessarily work for them in the civilian world. They have to take off the suit of armor and learn how to be vulnerable to things beyond their control. Continuing to wear the armor will weigh you down when you could be sprinting ahead.

Ripit, thanks for the post and the really fantastic insight. As the Department struggles to find resources to fund the modernization required to win in competition against the PRC, and meet all of the rest of the 2022 NDS objectives, the Reserve Component presents a unique and reversable means of preserving force structure at a fraction of the cost and reinvesting those resources into modernization and readiness. This is particularly true of the Air National Guard front line units that maintain the exact same readiness levels and response times as their Active Component counterparts but do so at 1/3 - 1/2 the cost. Now is the time to make the shift and harvest those resources to reinvest into modernization. The Reserve Component now has a much more experienced work force than the Active Component and has proven that it can retain these members (85% retention rate) to 20 years and beyond. It is time to stop looking at the Reserve Component as a bill payer and start looking at it as opportunity space.
In 1788 Alexander Hamilton saw the advantages of a largely part-time military component that would provide for the defense of the nation while also avoiding the costs of a standing army and encouraging the economic development of the nation: “To oblige the great body of the yeomanry, and of the other classes of the citizens, to be under arms for the purpose of going through military exercises and evolutions, as often as might be necessary to acquire the degree of perfection which would entitle them to the character of a well-regulated militia, would be a real grievance to the people, and a serious public inconvenience and loss. It would form an annual deduction from the productive labor of the country, to an amount which, calculating upon the present numbers of the people, would not fall far short of the whole expense of the civil establishments of all the States.” - Federalist 29, Concerning the Militia. Though much has changed, Hamilton's insight is as true today as in 1788. The Air National Guard and Army National Guard continue the tradition of providing combat-ready forces to defend the nation while also enabling civilian careers in the private and public sectors. This creates a tremendous public-private synergy that is one of our great strengths as a nation, which we need now more than ever. #nationalsecurity #nationalguard #strategy #constitution #militaryhistory https://lnkd.in/etf9q9a8

This Saturday May 18th marks the 74th anniversary of the inception of Armed Forces Day. The first Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marked the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense. In the comment section of my thread, add your name and branch of service you are or have served in.
