Those living with HIV are mainly focused on the physical health symptoms they experience, but often times patients' mental health can be overlooked. Mental health is often neglected when talking to a patient about HIV prevention, care, and treatment. Physicians, remember to connect with your patients to create strategies enhancing their mental health. Patients, remember to create open communication with your doctors to seek support for your mental health. #StopHIVTogether #HIVTestMyWay

Taking care of a person's mental health is just as important as taking care of their physical health. Health conditions like HIV can exacerbate any mental health conditions a person has. How can you and your organization help people with HIV address mental health conditions? Encourage individuals to seek support and discuss treatment options with their healthcare provider. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that approximately 800,000 people worldwide die from suicide every year (an average of one death every 40 seconds) (2019). What are the unique associations between different forms of IPV and PTSS among women who use or misuse substances? And how might trauma-informed care support women who use and/or misuse substances and are experiencing IPV? Intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical, sexual, and/or psychological violence by a current or former partner, affects over 1 in 3 women worldwide. IPV is associated with multiple negative physical and mental health outcomes such as chronic pain, sexually transmitted infections (including HIV), substance use and misuse, and an increased risk of developing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. Comprehensive assessments and integrated trauma informed interventions that address multiple risks are crucial for women who use or misuse substances and may be experiencing IPV and PTSS. This latest blog post on the ISTSS Trauma Blog summarizes recent research with Central Asian women who use drugs and alcohol to better understand IPV and PTSS in marginalized populations that are particularly vulnerable to IPV.
