Today, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Disability Pride Month! Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities—both visible and non-visible—such as requiring employers to provide accommodations for individuals with disabilities and ensuring that buildings and public transportation are accessible. Our goal is to provide an inclusive and accessible space for our patients, visitors, and team members and advocate for equal opportunities for all. Join us as we celebrate and recognize achievements in this area while continuing to work toward bridging the gap in disability inclusion. #ADA #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #ADAanniversary #ADA34 #DisabilityPrideMonth #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay #inclusivity #accessibility

It is really rare to see a piece like this. This segment from CBS is an in-depth look at one of the struggles at the very heart of the disability rights movement: the fight - and the right - to live outside the walls of an institution. Specifically, it focuses on what's happening right in our own backyards: Illinois houses more people with disabilities in state-run institutions, and spends more running them, than all but four other states. In tandem with compelling stories of people with disabilities actually impacted by the lack of federally-mandated services and supports, the data is clear. "We need more choices. It is a civil rights issue." https://lnkd.in/edX6xeu9

✨ "I have autism, what's your disability" - Cameron, 321 Barista ✨ Happy Disability Pride Month! 🤩 I feel very lucky to interact with people with all types of disabilities every day, and I am better off because of it. One time I was working with one of our baristas named Cameron. If you've ever visited 321 Coffee when Cameron is working, you know you're in for a treat. She greets everyone with a smile and a rapid-fire series of questions like, “What’s your favorite boy band?”, "Who's your cartoon crush?" and “What did you name your car?”. It's AWESOME. One day, Cameron said to a customer, “I have autism, what's your disability?” I saw the customer tense up, and I was ready to step in. I saw the customer exhale and say, "You know, I'm not very good at math". Cameron, with her ever-present enthusiasm, quickly said "Well I'm great at math! If you were born in 1970, you just turned 54!" and the conversation continued. Cameron taught me so much in that moment. She showed me the value of vulnerability and the importance of genuinely connecting with others beyond the surface level. This is just one of the many examples of how you can learn so much from surrounding yourself with people who are different from you. At 321 Coffee, we celebrate people for who they are because there is so much value in diversity. When you put people from different backgrounds together, it challenges the way you think, highlights your blindspots, and offers fresh perspectives. This is what gives us the power to grow and the ability to innovate! This month is all about celebrating the experiences, achievements, and challenges of the disability community. Something that 321 absolutely loves to do (regardless of what month it is!) 🎉 So cheers to being different! #DisabilityPrideMonth #WorkplaceInclusion #Awareness #321Coffee

Reaching out to people with disabilities to understand issues about people with disabilities supports the mantra, "nothing about us without us". So, thank you NPR for your intentional inclusion in the creation of this article. As such, I would like to see as many in the community, who are comfortable doing so, to participate. #storytelling #NAUWU #disabilitypride #disabilityawareness https://lnkd.in/gzgbi2G4

Join WHC in celebrating #DisabilityPrideMonth today, on the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Enacted on July 26, 1990, the ADA marked a crucial moment in the journey towards equality and inclusion. Challenges in accessibility and discrimination persist, especially in housing—a domain not directly covered by the ADA but protected under the Fair Housing Act to ensure reasonable accommodations and modifications for those with disabilities. This 2023 article from Open Communities details the significance of Disability Pride Month and the critical issue of housing discrimination still faced by many in the disability community: https://buff.ly/4bZ5UcA

Do you know about the timeline of the Americans with Disabilities Act that passed in 1990? One of the first “whispers” of a piece of legislation protecting Americans with disabilities was in 1986 when the National Council on Disability issued a report of legislative recommendations that they suggested be called “The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1986.” Then in 1989, Sen. Weicker and Rep. Coelho presented the 100th Congress with the first version of the ADA. It has a blue cover with a image of an eagle on it.]

July is Disability Pride Month in the United States. 🦾👩🏼🦽👩🏿🦯♿️ 🧩 The month-long celebration honors people with disabilities and their unique talents and skills, and aims to promote visibility and awareness of the disability community. Disability Pride Month has been celebrated annually in July since 1990, the year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in many areas, including employment, transportation, housing, and access to government programs and services. Its crazy to think the ADA has only been around 34 years! I’ll be posting relevant content all month long. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityPride #IHaveADisability #DEIA

Today marks the start of Disability Pride Month. Created in 1990 in the United States to mark the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, 30 years on its title seems at odds with the social model of disability. While we celebrate disabled people in July, it can also be a time to prompt organisations to consider what is disabling about their products, services, their environments and workplaces, and the action they could take to change that. It can be a time to engage with disabled people and find out their views that can make that change meaningful and effective. We have four thousand members of our consumer panel who are ready to share their experiences. What's the one thing you could improve for your disabled customers or visitors? #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabledPeople #Accessibility
