Think about it... it's your vision for how your product will achieve it's strategic goals. → An average roadmap - will provide clarity and focus and allow you to get started and learning more. → A good roadmap - will get buy-in and build in process to deliver and achieve goals. → A great roadmap - will also inspire, rally, and get the most out of the team in order to deliver amazing value to end-customers that will use your product/service. Roadmaps need to focus on the value delivered to the customer and stakeholders. It's that simple, and that simplicity is critical to success. Please remember, simple doesn't make this easy. Most companies will have a product roadmap of some sort. A valuable tool used to communicate direction and align the various teams responsible for delivering a new feature to market. Some companies even have an external public facing roadmap. This can be used to help new and existing customers understand the types of problems the company is looking to solve or perhaps communicate what upcoming features they can expect to enjoy. Another way to communicate with customers is to use an ideas portal. This can be hugely valuable for capturing new ideas, requests, and customer feedback on their products and services. But did you know an idea portal can also give clues as to what a company *might* be considering bringing to market in future? Whilst Aha! doesn't have a public facing roadmap it *does* have an idea portal. Want to take a glimpse at what your favourite roadmapping tool may be planning? Of course you do! Here's how... 1. Head over to Aha!'s website and find their public ideas portal 2. Click on the status filter to show the various types of idea statuses and you will see (at time of writing): Future consideration - 5975 Likely to implement - 50 Planning to implement - 38 3. You can then use the filter to see what ideas sit in each bucket. Whilst we don't get specific timeframes as to what these status translate to we can be pretty sure that ideas in "Planning to implement" are the most likely things for Aha! to work on in future. And that's pretty exciting if you're an existing Aha! user (or planning to be). Just don’t tell them I told you! 🤫 --- 👋 Hi, I’m Justin. In the Product Management world, there has been a shift from traditional feature-focused roadmaps to outcome-oriented ones. This approach prioritizes customer goals and success metrics, making roadmaps more aligned with delivering real value to users. An outcome-based roadmap is a strategic planning tool in product management that prioritizes achieving customer or business goals (outcomes) rather than focusing on delivering specific features or tasks (outputs). For example, instead of planning to release "Feature X by Q2," an outcome-based roadmap might focus on "increasing user engagement by 20% by Q2" and then explore various ways to achieve that, such as building new features, improving UX, or enhancing customer support. Key Elements: 1. Customer-Centric Goals: Instead of listing features, the roadmap defines desired outcomes like improving customer retention, increasing engagement, or solving a key pain point. This approach keeps the focus on delivering value to users. 2. Measurable Success Metrics: Each outcome is associated with specific success metrics that can be tracked over time, such as a percentage increase in user satisfaction or a reduction in churn rate. 3. Flexibility: Since the roadmap focuses on outcomes, teams are not locked into delivering specific features. They can adapt their solutions based on user feedback, new data, or changing market conditions, as long as they achieve the defined outcomes. 4. Cross-Functional Alignment: Outcome-based roadmaps ensure that everyone—across product, marketing, and engineering teams—works toward the same goals. It drives collaboration around common objectives, making the roadmap a more strategic tool rather than just a project timeline. Benefits: - Improved Focus: Teams focus on delivering what truly matters for the customer and business. - Adaptability: The ability to pivot or adjust plans based on real-time feedback or evolving customer needs. - Clear Value Proposition: Teams can better communicate the "why" behind product decisions, aligning efforts with measurable success. Let me know if you have switched to this way of building Product roadmaps :) #product #product_management #product_roadmap #outcome_oriented #features #customer_focussed #product_world
