Today, we joined the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) and other community partners in celebrating Kensington’s inclusive community development process. In response to a history of strategic disinvestment in Kensington, exacerbated by the destructive effects of the opioid crisis, the Kensington Planning Process is a coordinated effort to direct resources according to community-defined priorities – and with residents with lived experience as central drivers – to ensure long-term community change and transformation. Spring Point Partners’ investment in the process is aligned with our social justice portfolio’s responsiveness to the self-defined needs of historically oppressed people. A new report – Kensington Planning Process: History, Context, Voices – outlines the process and provides evidence that residents need to be centered in any community development and neighborhood revitalization process. During this presentation, I shared a story of my 4-year-old's interaction with kids at two distinct parties to help define what "community" was. - At party A in an elite metro suburb, my child--even at a young age--knew she had to play by herself because of the indifference of the other children. - At party B, in a rural location, the other children played with each other the entire duration--no questions asked, no assumptions made. 🤔 Why were the reactions of other kids so different? - In setting A, living in an "exclusive" area means exactly that--it is purposely built to exclude certain types of people and this literally affects one's psyche, even the minds of our children. One can attend school, church, rec leagues, and grocery stores and never/seldom see various types of people. - Setting B on the other hand, had a much more noticeable community feel because of the nature of the place. Rural settings often have few options. Everyone, regardless of status, has a limited number of things to choose from. Hence, everyone engages in the same thing and our institutions are used by all (and disproportionately drive community engagement). ✅ Case in point, in my hometown, it doesn't matter what your net worth is, everyone works out at our local Y, you'll find everyone at one of two grocery stores, and kids go to the same summer camps. 📔 Takeaways from my child's experience: - Sometimes, all it takes to expose our failings as a society is children not feeling inclined to play with each other. - When building communities, it's important to build around things that naturally facilitate real, genuine, and positive interaction and connections. - We learn the most and are the most open-minded when we live in vibrant, mixed-income communities. I'm generalizing to an extent (not by much) but I think the message can be interpreted clearly. What do you think? What community would you rather live in? #CommunityDevelopment #InclusiveCommunitites #Neighborhood #rural #urban #suburban

Often I am asked, why I love local government and while there are too many reasons to list, always near the top is placemaking and community development. It's amazing what we all can do when we embrace what makes us all unique and work together towards common goals. #publicadministration #LocalGov #placemaking #publicprivatepartnership #communitydevelopment #leadership

Great article by Joop Hofman en Cormac Russell, which gives us a new lens to look at the different structures and breedingground of communities and neighbourhood life and al the “unseen ripple effects of what they are doing and how they do it are rarely noticed, let alone celebrated.” The metaphor of communities as a forest/ecosystem helps to understand why communities are no working groups or projects. And why it’s damaging when they are overloaded with interventions, activities and programs of institutions. As Marianne van der Sloot, the alderwoman of the social domain of Den Bosch, says: ‘We have to stop pulling the blades, we have to feed the soil of communities in a way that benefits them.’ The article also gives us guidance on what this means in practice. What other questions we can ask ourselves (also as researchers) to get an idea which value and impact our communities have. I found it very fascinating that Joop en Cormac show us the influence of predominantly define ourselves on having rather than being (Erich Fromm). They argue for community as a verb and show what influence this has on our mutual relationships and our own role in communities. It's an essay with a whole bunch of starting points for new learning conversations to gain a broader understanding of communities and ways to make them fully flourish! #ABCD #community #neighbourhood
Cormac Russell and I, we wrote an article on the layers of community building. Because the key of change and growth in community is not the initiative or project, but the working of the rootsystem. Everything what is underground. Everytime we be, and not we have. A pleasure to write with Cormac. A Dutch version is coming up, thanks to LSA bewoners

Community engagement serves an important role in ensuring more equitable decision-making, building trust between residents and leadership, strengthening relationships with neighbors, and increasing support for projects or initiatives - which is why we need as many voices as possible to get involved in the process. Check out our new blog post to see why community engagement is important - but only works as intended when those speaking UP are truly representative of their communities: https://buff.ly/48Kax9X
