Support for "missing middle" housing is growing, and for good reason. Missing middle housing is a key piece of the puzzle to solve our affordability crisis as land and construction costs have become much more expensive. Of course the Dallas Housing Coalition’s amazing PR team, led by Christine Rogers and Ashley Howland of SparkFarm, broke the news first, but I thought I’d share the video of my speech accepting the Emerging Leader Award, for our work addressing affordable housing, at the Community Council of Greater Dallas’s Founders Awards Dinner last week (picture highlights in comments). In it, I recognize the other nominees, Tammy Johnson of EMPOWERING THE MASSES and Prinscilla Moore of Delighted to Doula Postpartum Services, thank Ashley Brundage for her leadership and guidance as the founding Board Chair of the Coalition and now CEO of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, and share the honor with the Coalition’s 260+ members, especially our Steering Committee, and all BGT Strategies LLC team members, past and present, who made this work possible: Associates Henri Nilsen, Kim Le, Lauren Edwards and Interns Aguer Atem, Isaiah Calhoun, Katherine Gustafson, Christopher Granberry, Laila Norris, Ovet Martinez, and Vedika Chamaria. Funding, like the $82M dedicated to attainable housing (for the first time) and homeless solutions through Dallas’ May 2024 Capital Bond Program, and updating ForwardDallas, our comprehensive land use plan, won’t solve our affordable housing crisis by themselves. The decisions we make over the next 5-10 years will shape Dallas’ future for better or worse. Now is simply a crucial time. I appreciate all of my online and in-real-life networks’ support. This work is not always easy, but it is so worth it and needed. This award is a meaningful reminder for us to keep going and reach higher. Sign up for news and updates or join our movement at https://lnkd.in/gArQYyc7, come to our inaugural Housing Summit November 21st, and follow us on social media if you are not already. “Dallas is BIG enough for everyone!”

Texas faces a growing challenge, and lawmakers can no longer ignore it. For decades people have been drawn to Texas for our economy and low cost of living. However, rising market values, accompanying property tax bills, and decreased affordability for low-to-middle income residents are now straining our cities.
