In August, Springer Nature held its inaugural Korea Research Advisory Forum (KRAF), bringing together a diverse group of influential figures from South Korean research organisations. This forum was established to discuss key challenges and priorities for research in South Korea and to explore how we can work together to address these issues. It follows similar research advisory bodies setup with key stakeholders in the USA, Japan, Africa and Europe. 📣 South Korea has become the first Asian nation to join the European Union’s Horizon Europe, the world’s largest (€95.5 billion) research and innovation program, as of January 1, 2025. 🚀 Key Highlights: ✔ Start Date: South Korean researchers can begin participating in projects starting in 2025, with the first calls for proposals expected in March. ✔ Focus Area: South Korea’s participation is centered on “Pillar 2”, which addresses global issues and boosts industrial competitiveness. ✔ Equal Access: Researchers will enjoy the same rights as EU counterparts, including acting as consortium coordinators, participating in projects, and receiving direct funding—no additional domestic evaluations required. 📅 What’s Next? To celebrate and activate this partnership, the Ministry of Science and ICT has planned a Korea-EU Research and Innovation Day in March 2025, offering networking opportunities, knowledge exchange, and an introduction to the 2025 work program. This collaboration is expected to elevate South Korea’s global research presence, fostering innovative solutions to global challenges alongside Europe’s top scientists. As the EU prepares for a successor R&I program in 2028, this partnership lays a strong foundation for continued collaboration in the years to come. #Innovation #GlobalCollaboration #SouthKorea #EU #HorizonEurope #ScienceAndTechnology #ResearchAndDevelopment Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IAN (Netherlands Innovation Network) Peter Wijlhuizen Elizabeth Jeong Eun Ha Veysel Yiğit Mike Timmermans Nina Peeters

Today, we want to share highlights from a recent interview with Dr. Hannes Gohli, Director of the China Competence Center, conducted by Forschung & Lehre! Dr. Gohli provides insights into the importance of cooperation with China in the current political landscape, delving into the nuances of academic partnerships. He also discusses the principles and mission of the Center. Here are some key takeaways: 📌 Diminishing opportunities for exchange between Europe and China pose significant risks for bilateral relations in all areas. 📌 Collaboration with Chinese researchers is essential if we want to shape the future. It's vital for Germany to maintain this connection, while also addressing security concerns. 📌 The China Competence Center’s role is to advise, not control. By raising awareness, we empower researchers to ask critical questions. 📌 Exchange fuels the progress of science. Link to the interview: https://lnkd.in/eKg8y4cu

For every truth, there are multiple realities. Martin Kossi 's insights on the China-Africa debate shed light on a different perspective. In his recent paper, "Do Colonial Legacy and Engagement with China Impact the Effectiveness of the European Aid in Promoting Democracy in African States?", Martin highlights a unique finding: Chinese economic involvement in Africa correlates positively with democracy scores. This unconventional view challenges the prevailing narrative and offers a fresh outlook on China-Africa relations.
