Last week I attended the Social Value Conference 2024 hosted by Social Value Portal I was there to listen and absorb as much as possible from all the people that have been walking this path for many years. Startup Sherpas started our own journey in this space about 12 months ago, working alongside some amazing partners. In particular I would like to give a shout out to Zach Beckett and Greg Blake, MBA, CSM from Accenture UK & Ireland who have been amazing at helping us navigate this space. I was surprised that so much of the conference was focussed on procurement. But having once run an innovation workshop wearing a "I heart procurement" t-shirt, I was delighted that such an often overlooked business function was getting its time on stage. Other key takeaways for me were around place-based approaches (phew, validation for the investment in localised programme management we made this summer), the importance of collaboration and the balance of metrics and storytelling. After 3 days, I came away with the real sense that social value is the right place for Startup Sherpas to focus our efforts. I scribbled on my notepad these words "we create social value by unlocking the potential of the next generation". They say lightning never strikes the same place twice, but both of Stijn's workshops at Wednesday's Innovation Roundtable® were electrifying for sure! ⚡ Let's 'round up' our key insights on: 🌱 Organizing for mid-term impact in a short-term environment 1. Venture strategists are like professional portfolio investors, you have to speak their language and measure your efforts to go beyond ROI 2. Innovation programs thrive with multi-generational accountability. Think of it as a way to avoid the inconsistent decision-making that can come from short-term leaders—much like politics! 3. Agree on what to measure and survey them structurally to see if the needle is moving. Don't forget about cultural elements! 4. If output or impact is hard to measure, use activity-based metrics, like decision-making speed, as personal targets to improve step-by-step. 🚀 Instrumenting breakthrough innovation ventures 1. No shortcut to hard work and no party without resources. Breakthrough innovation requires dedicated teams! 2. Actively organize for multidisciplinarity: Set up a complementary core team and bring in even more diversity at critical points. 3. Supercharge (venture) teams with critical tools like ecosystems, prototyping capabilities, and method coaches. If not available in-house, partner up externally! Proud to be part of this fearless team of professionals and for a second year in a row! Let me back up and explain. When Fast Company listed BAL the first time I had friends in other firms and in other industries ask me what we were doing. Law firms, after all, are usually staunch defenders of the status quo and not widely recognized as innovators. Innovation is risky and time consuming and expensive. Much easier and safer for a firm to do what everyone else is doing and just change the logo. My answer was simple - we are fearless. We aren't afraid to try and fail and then go after it another way. The secret, I shared, is that our "it" is not just the well-prepared case, or new tech, or important internal efficiency projects, or an expanded service delivery model, or culture. Those are the results. Our "it" is our mission - to make a positive difference in peoples' lives. That isn't just jargon. We believe. To pull it off a group has to be willing to see and do things differently. A group truly dedicated to that doesn't scare or give up easily when things don't go as planned or the rules change or things get tough. That is how we've helped millions of people and their companies since we began and how each of us can't wait to help the next. For me, that takes the form of helping people be free to live, work, raise families, and pursue their dreams...wherever they want in the world. For that, I am fearless.
