Reflections on a Startup Journey and the Path Forward
I've always loved the metaphors of "Seed" and "Greenhouse" when it comes to startups. Whether it's an incubator, greenhouse, or accelerator, they all signify a nurturing space for startups to grow into mighty trees, and perhaps even unicorns.
Today's post is in Thai, directed towards my fellow Thai startup founders. Rejections, while disheartening, can offer valuable insights for improvement or even a change in direction. Many founders, myself included, have faced the dilemma of "Should we continue or call it quits?"
I've always sought validation through external judgment, participating in local and international competitions. The awards and recognition, beyond their monetary value, serve as proof that we're on the right track, at least in the eyes of the judges.
2022 brought a wave of positive feedback, propelling us forward. However, 2023 brought self-doubt. It's easy for founders to overlook their own flaws; our handwriting might be clear to us but illegible to others.
Seeking fresh perspectives, I traveled to Singapore. The response was overwhelmingly positive: "This is amazing!" I returned to Thailand invigorated, and we accelerated our research. We're now close to obtaining drug registration from the FDA.
Yet, back in Thailand, I felt stuck in the same ecosystem, the same networks. It felt like our "seed" was on the verge of rotting in the same old soil. Something wasn't right. I sought out mentors who would be brutally honest, even if they weren't Thai. Outsiders are more likely to see and voice the unspoken.
I found new friends and dared to ask for their honest feedback. One friend, after a private conversation, advised me to go abroad, expressing his concern that Thailand doesn't truly value deep tech. Another friend, an "ecosystem builder," echoed this sentiment, adding that the problem wasn't with me or my work, but rather the limitations of the current support system.
Today, I'm not bidding farewell to Thailand, nor am I declaring where I'm headed. The future of YaBEZ's seed remains uncertain. But one thing is for sure: it will return to benefit Thai patients first, allowing them to reap the rewards of our research.
This isn't a tale of sorrow, but of gratitude. I'm thankful for everyone who has been part of our journey. I promise to make Thailand proud. I am a Thai researcher who has successfully created a "new drug," a first-in-class discovery in Thai history, for the world to know and use. This drug, born from Thai intellect and resources, may be manufactured elsewhere, but its roots are here.
#ButItCannotBeGrownHere, not in an environment that doesn't understand its value or how to nurture it. But I will persist, and I won't stop until I succeed in bringing it back to benefit my homeland, Thailand.

🌟Another Exciting News 🌟
Chennai secured the 18th spot in the Asia Regional Rankings among the top 30 Startup Ecosystems, as per the Global Startup Ecosystem Report by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network. The report, released at London Tech Week on June 10, also placed Chennai in the 21-30 range in the Emerging Ecosystem Rankings globally.
Highlights:
· The report was based on extensive research and analysis of data from 3.5 million startups across 290 global ecosystems over 50 countries to date.
· The report highlighted that Tamil Nadu generated $27.4 billion in Ecosystem Value from July 1, 2021, to December 31, 2023. This value represents the economic impact calculated from exits and startup valuations.
· Chennai earned distinctions in several categories: it ranked in the top 25 globally and top 10 in Asia for Affordable Talent, reflecting the city's capability to attract tech talent. Additionally, it was placed in the top 15 in Asia for Performance, measuring the accumulated tech startup value from exits and funding, and in the top 20 in Asia for Funding, which evaluates early-stage funding and investor activity. Chennai also appeared in the top 25 Asia Ecosystems for Talent and Experience, underscoring its ability to generate and retain talent.
· StartupTN also focuses on inclusive growth, aiming to foster mass entrepreneurship across all sections of society. The Tamil Nadu SC/ST Startup Fund, launched in 2022-23, is a key initiative in this regard, with equity investments of Rs 54.20 crore sanctioned for 36 startups.
· The efforts to increase the number of Startups in the state have yielded significant results. The number of DPIIT-registered startups surged from 2,300 in March 2021 to over 8,500 at present. In addition to regular mentors who will work in group sessions and lead mentors who will work individually with startups, we have organized three intensive mentor madness days!
☝️ Mentor madness is a common format in startup accelerators. During them, each team will have the opportunity to meet with a large number of mentors in one day during 30-minute slots.
The important thing is that all mentors have completely different expertise, so startups will be able to get versatile feedback on their products. In addition, these will be mentors whom our participants have not yet met during other sessions.

Actionable steps:
- Go to experts in the same industry. They love inspiration from young ideas.
- Build good connections and networks. Weekly meetings with the team to discuss positive aspects help.
- Mentorship is crucial. Founders need a shoulder to lean on and listen.
Founding is an infinite game. Run it like a marathon.
Give more than you take. Be the change you want to see in the world.
Stay focused. Go for gold. Remember why you’re here and what you bring to the table.
It’s more about respect than being friends.
