Today we kickstart serialisation of #sustainabletourismtrends24 that we launched yesterday. These trends are the result of our knowledge and intelligence pillar that seeks to make knowledge on sustainable development of tourism more accessible. Our goal is to inspire net positive growth of tourism. 1. GREEN FINANCING- Climate is top priority for Africa, & is attracting green finance. These finances will trickle to nature based tourism areas inspiring investment in green projects, in effect boosting destination environmental resilience. The extent to which the green financing opportunities trickle to tourism will depend on industry readiness through green investment ready projects. Fear has been expressed over green projects that disrupt local livelihoods and many more that leak benefits out of destinations. These fears are real and can be addressed by observing principles of sustainable development. Discover the key findings that unveil governments' perspectives on the challenges hindering tourism as a catalyst for #ruraldevelopment. #Infrastructure emerged as the top priority, with seven challenges identified. 🛣️ 'Deficiencies in access infrastructure' topped the list, resonating with 34 countries. For 15 nations, the 'shortage of basic services' took the second spot. Join us at the UN Tourism Side Event on 29th May from 4PM – 5:30PM (Antigua and Barbuda Time) where SPTO CEO will be part of the Panel Discussions on ‘Regenerative Tourism for Resilience: Policy, Practice and Finance’. The need to enhance tourism governance in SIDS for resilience and sustainability is of utmost importance in the face of escalating environmental vulnerabilities and additional setbacks such as inflation and higher travel costs. On #World_Tourism_Day 🌍, it is pertinent to emphasize the pivotal role of the tourism sector in fostering peace, open-mindedness, and communication among nations🤩. Tourism plays a significant role in driving economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development, while also facilitating cultural exchange, heritage preservation, and environmental conservation. Furthermore, a robust tourism sector enhances a nation's global reputation and bolsters diplomatic relations, thereby contributing to sustainable development✨.

I have always maintained that sustainability is complex but not complicated. We just need to be intentional and not euphoric. Euphoric here is also polite term for greenwashing. So today was a great day to demystify complexity of climate for SMEs. I am more than elated to be associated with this great milestone. #mylittlething It was a win-day for climate. Kenya's tourism should be proud of this milestone. We, Sustainable Travel & Tourism Africa launched a climate action toolkit for SMEs in tourism. It is the first of its kind for tourism in Eastern Africa. #stas2024 update Tourism and Development in Sub Saharan Africa: Current Issues and Local (community) Realities This book by Prof Marina Novelli captures many realities that we often discuss at Sustainable Tourism and Africa Summit each year. #stas2024 is no exception. The book acknowledges the paradoxes, complexities and inequalities of tourism in relation to development, wealth creation, growth, redistribution, governance and hosts-guests’ relationships. But there are now realities. For example , there are new complexities with community engagement. I have worked with host communities in Kenya for nearly 25 years, and today the biggest challenges of community integration in tourism is predatory community financing. I will join the community panel at #stas2024 to speak more about this threat.
