The legendary metal and carbon fiber 3D printing company Markforged announced that it will be acquired for $115M in cash. This is a 95% loss from its $2B peak valuation on the stock market. Depending on when shareholders bought in – this may be a huge mark-down or just a modest loss. Despite the numbers, it’s important to remember the extraordinary difficulty of building any cutting-edge company. Every startup that doesn’t implode under sheer difficulty is a miracle in its own right. Additive manufacturing innovations from companies like Markforged have transformed countless industries and startups, including our own. At Cleana, Inc., they’ve enabled us to quickly iterate through hundreds of designs of our electric-free, automatic lifting and lowering seats, enabling us to build the next generation of seats. Traditional machining and manufacturing would be several times too expensive and too slow. More than 95% of our prototypes are completely made from our fleet of PLA and SLA printers. We never would have existed without them. Reflecting on this – it’s important to remember the positive impact of our work in addition to its financial outcome. #startups #cleana #founderlife
