Join this free online lecture from the Library of Congress and the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration on the impact of long-term anoxic/hypoxic encasements on August 13! "For more than ten years, Waldseemüller’s 1507 World Map and the Abel Buell map were on exhibit at the Library of Congress. Such long-term exhibitions were made possible by using anoxic and hypoxic encasements. These two maps were taken off exhibit in 2022-2023 and probably provide the first examples of test data on the impact of long-term display in anoxia and hypoxia storage on paper-based materials. Speakers from the Library and the National Archives will describe the development of advanced encasements for their institutions and the monitoring of their internal environments during deployment. Additionally, the Library will present its research approach to assess before and after exhibition data of the maps, and discuss implications of the results for future preservation planning." Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC)Spring Scientific was a great meeting. Here are some thoughts: 1- The next breakthroughs in IO will come from areas that have been under studied and had received not much commercial attention such as immunometabolism and microbiome. The science is maturing and these areas will have a broad impact on all things IO, cell therapy, cancer vaccines, bi-specifics, etc. 2- The possibility of re-programming terminally exhausted T-cell through metabolic interventions is quite intriguing. Remember these cells live and chang out in the tumor and they don't respond to checkpoint inhibitors. We just need to get them going and Greg Delgoffe is working on exciting interventions to get these cells going. 3- If you get dendritic cells in a tumor their right kind of food (glutamine) then they can jump start anti-tumor immunity. 3- Avoid artificial sweeteners. Bad for your T-cells. 4- Bacterial based therapies can turn cold tumors hot. 5- You can find oral bacterial genomic material in brain tumors and brain metastasis most likely got their by immune cells. 6- We need to understand tumor supporting and immune supporting diets. 7- We need more metabolism and microbiome intervention trials. You can learn more from treating one patient than many observational and mouse studies. Ultimately our goal is to treat humans not mice.

What are some characteristics of problems that make them suitable to be described by foundation models? 2. How do we conceive of and construct foundation models for problems in which no clear “building blocks” exist (in contrast to areas such as materials science)? 3. Is it possible for foundation models to produce Nobel prize-type discovery of new phenomena as this usually goes against conventional wisdom? Would it be able to produce a hypothesis contrary to most data that it is likely to see? 4. What [really] is emergence? How do we better better understand the factors that determine emergent properties in large models? 5. What are the scaling laws to describe the dependency on factors such as training data size, feature dimension, computational resources, and structure and size of model?  6. Methods for training models when the inference objectives are abstract, ill-specified, or misaligned 7. Methods to develop trust in Foundation Models 8. Mathematical challenges and solution strategies for training large models given limited energy, computation, and  memory 9. Mathematical characterization of the effect of data imbalance on accuracy and generalizability, especially with regard to exceedingly rare events and other phenomena in the tails of the training distribution.  10. What are the new mathematical and statistical frameworks that embody human-like properties of reasoning, insight, creativity, and critical judgment that could enable models to postulate well beyond the data used to train them?
