My latest: Over 65% of Dodge City residents identify as Latino, yet not one has been elected to city office since 1997. Why? Are Latino voters being systemically shut out? Or is this a symptom of civic disengagement? I spent months researching these issues and conflicting narratives. While I’m still not fluent in legal-ese, you can read my story to learn more about the factions at play behind civic representation. https://lnkd.in/gXkyfcae

Definitely will read this as it is a topic of great interest to me. Western Kansas has multiple majority Latino populations yet based on the ethnicities of the elected officials you would never know.
In a historic legal victory, the small town of Newbern, Alabama, has won a lawsuit that restores the fundamental right to vote for its residents. For the first time in decades, the people of Newbern will have their voices heard and their votes counted, thanks to the tireless efforts of Mayor Patrick Braxton and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.
For years, the Black vote has been and continues to be, systematically under attack across the United States. This case is a powerful reminder of the importance of voting rights and the ongoing struggle for racial equity and justice in America. It underscores the critical role of legal advocacy and community resilience in ensuring that every citizen has a say in their government.
As we celebrate this monumental win, let us continue to champion the cause of voting rights and work towards a more inclusive and democratic society.

Latino or not, it is important to understand that if one chooses to stay at home, they may not have the right to complain about their government, whether it be at the local or national level. This is because staying at home implies that one is not actively participating in civic engagement or fulfilling their duties as a citizen, which includes voicing one's opinions on government policies and decisions.
Therefore, it is essential to exercise our right to vote and stay informed about current events to have an active say in how we are governed.
A few weeks has passed after this decision but at Hispanic Federation we're still celebrating a victory for voting rights!
As an organization dedicated to empowering our community and amplifying our voices, we're excited to see our rights as voters protected. The right to access and express our choices through voting is a cornerstone of democracy, and we must all work to protect it.
On March 1, 2024, a federal judge recently handed a significant win by striking down a provision in a Florida state law. This provision would have barred noncitizens, including legal permanent residents or green card holders, from registering voters. The judge ruled that the provision, which assessed a $50,000 fine for each noncitizen involved in voter registration, violated constitutional equal protection rights.
This decision in the case Hispanic Federation v. Byrd is especially crucial as an estimated 1.3 million lawful permanent residents live in Florida, many of whom engage in civic activities like voter registration as part of their journey to becoming U.S. citizens or learning about the U.S. government.
This ruling is a significant step towards protecting our right to vote and ensuring that everyone's voice is heard. Let's continue to stand up for our rights and advocate for a fair and inclusive democracy for all!

Will this be your first election, or do you remember when the choice was Jefferson or Burr?
Today is National Voter Registration Day, so we're flashing back to last week's post with The Ultimate Guide to Organizing Yourself to Vote. If you're an American citizen, please take the opportunity (and the advice in this post) to find out what you need to get registered — or use the resources to make sure you are STILL registered. (Don't be Archie Bunker!)
Learn about the resources for helping special populations (students, military members, disabled folks, overseas and expat voters, and unhoused persons), figure out how, where, and when you'll vote (early? by absentee ballot in the mail? by standing in line with fellow citizens), ensure you have the right ID, and research the candidates and the issues. And enjoy my pop culture references.
MAGA BENEFITS FROM THE LEGACY OF SLAVERY-HERE IS HOW
Most of us know Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 popular votes for President by millions of votes. Since the GOP swerved right and then went MAGA it has become a permanent minority party.
The only way they have held on to power is through the Electoral College. The EC was a compromise grudgingly made by the founders to get the southern states to join the new union by protecting the existence of the horror of chattel slavery. The south feared the increasingly more populous North would eliminate slavery if majority rule was in place. (The Senate was also a part of this pro-slavery compromise.).
It is more than ironic that today the EC protects a party that
# suppresses the voting rights of people of color (thank you Jim Crow)
# opposes women’s equality (thank you for making this so obvious JD Vance)
# attacks gay rights (Justice Thomas has made clear gay marriage is next on the chopping block after Roe)
#wants to crush unions (I give you Trump admiring Musk for firing workers attempting to unionize and the radical anti-union platform of Proect 2025).
# attacks immigrants as subhuman
# wants to re-segregate our schools with vouchers and teach a white version of history in all schools.

Donald J. Trump and the Politics of Democratic Dysfunction - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gaCVDs7v
The possibility of the polarization of American politics was anticipated by the founding generation of American leaders.39 It is arguable that the contemporary politics of polarization under the Republican party has set the stage for a return to the policies of the pre-1954 era in the 21st century and to reverse the momentum towards genuine democracy that was promised by the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States decided the case Shelby v. Holder and invalidated the federal oversight of states that had historically engaged in voter suppression. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 had established that practice to provide support for the right to vote as an index of citizenship equality. As in the cases of Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder has reasserted, in effect, the practice and principle of compromised citizenship in American life as a constraint upon the politics of effective representation for disadvantaged communities in American life.40 In a pithy assessment of the decision, the journalist Vann Newkirk II wrote: Ignoring that deep racial disparities do still exist in every phase of voting, especially in the precincts formerly covered by the Voting Rights Act, Roberts’s legal analysis boils down to the fact that preclearance was very effective in reversing disenfranchisement, so the country no longer needs it. In her dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg pointed out the apparent paradox of that reasoning, writing that “throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.41 QUO VADIS AMERICA?
This is #DeepDemocracy at work! 💪
Georgians are championing a pivotal piece of legislation, SB 179, propsed to dismantle barriers that currently prevent individuals with felony convictions from exercising their right to vote, specifically targeting the vague and discriminatory term "moral turpitude" in the state constitution. This term has historically been used to disenfranchise citizens, disproportionately affecting Black communities and exacerbating racial disparities in voting rights.
The origins of such disenfranchisement clauses can be traced back to the post-Reconstruction era, a time when such laws were explicitly designed to diminish the political power of Black Americans. Despite the progress made since then, the impact of these laws continues to be felt strongly, particularly in Georgia, where Black residents are disenfranchised at nearly triple the rate of white residents.
The movement to reverse felony disenfranchisement laws in Georgia is a vital step towards creating a more inclusive democratic process, one that respects and upholds the dignity and rights of all its citizens, irrespective of their past.
At the Movement Strategy Center, we stand in solidarity with the advocates and communities working tirelessly to ensure that every voice is heard in our democracy and every vote counts.
