An Important Next Step for Nature and Sustainability in Europe! 🌿 I would like to come back to a topic that I raised a year ago and that has bothered me since then, when the EU Nature Restoration Law was rejected by the EU Parliament. Two weeks ago, this important law has now been approved and published.🌿 For background: a staggering 81% of European habitats are in poor condition and the Nature Restoration Law aims to restore 20% of damaged areas by 2030, and by 2050, all damaged habitats will be rehabilitated. For me personally this topic is so critical and a key milestone in the European Green Deal agenda. And for us at Unilever, it is a key enabler to now get a robust framework across EU countries to further drive our Sustainability agenda and specifically our activities to shift global agricultural practices. As part of our Climate and Nature Fund, which amounts to 1 billion Euros, we champion regenerative agriculture. Still, hard for me to understand why this was rejected in the first place and why the legislation is more or less unnoticed by public media. But it doesn’t matter anymore, as all the efforts of us and many other players have worked out and it is on us to act and to bring this alive, now. 🌱🌍 #UniquelyUnilever #NatureRestoration #ClimateAction #SustainabilityMatters

It's time for nuclear base load power. We need constant reliable cheaper energy. Our livestock processors need to reduce their costs and pass the savings to the consumer. This will help reduce our inflation. In John Howard's days as PM, talking nuclear power would have lost you the election. How times change, a nuclear energy plan could now win an election for a party. Before we start sticking wind turbines in the ocean and solar panels in our paddocks we need to stop and reassess. France government policy in 2014, aimed to reduce nuclear's share of electricity generation to 50% by 2025. This target was delayed in 2019 to 2035, before being abandoned in 2023. In February 2022 France announced plans to build six new reactors and are thinking about building eight more. I think it's time we abandon our current energy policies.

All businesses depend on nature, either directly or through their supply chains, writes Samuel Sinclair co-founder of environmental consultancy Biodiversify in Sustainable Views. "Increasingly, 'biodiversity credits' — comparable to those seen in the carbon markets — are being touted by providers as a means of funding and incentivising" businesses to act on nature," he says. But these credits are a "cuckoo in the nest" and risk distracting from the "systemic change" which businesses must make to reduce their impact on nature, he argues. European policies are in the hands of the agricultural and food industry. Evidently they are able to bring in the votes that European and national politicians need to keep their jobs. The Green Deal is turning from a revolutionary plan into an issue to be swept under the carpet even though citizens want it and the environment needs it. But considering the global perspective, abandoning this plan also means betraying UN commitments on the protection of biodiversity. We pride ourselves as Europeans on being leaders in promoting green policies but when it comes to action, we hide behind a few tractors. https://lnkd.in/dYFijv5N

I hope that this super important piece by Kenny Torrella at Vox will lead to some reflection among the big Green Groups like WWF, The Nature Conservancy, and EDF about their deeply misguided industry partnerships that give cover to the highly destructive meat and dairy industry in exchange for millions of dollars in donations. In the words of an EDF staffer: “Instead of calling them out for causing harm, EDF lets them pollute and praises them for what little they do in hopes we’ll eventually convince them to change. So EDF provides cover for businesses by letting them set their own ambition.” I am one of the greens mentioned in this article who have "expressed deep frustration over their fellow environmentalists’ indifference to the meat industry’s environmental destruction, or worse, some organization’s willingness to partner with companies on greenwashing projects." Whether it is the Global Roundtable on "Sustainable" Beef or Tyson's "climate-friendly beef," or other industry alliances, the Big Green groups' endorsement and promotion of these bullshit industry PR tactics gives license to the industry to expand their destructive practices. Worse, it undermines other groups' efforts to slash meat and dairy subsidies and push for meaningful regulations that will hold these polluting corporations' accountable for the deep harm they are causing to the planet and local communities.

The transition to a nature-positive, net zero economy requires ambitious and forward looking legislation says L'OCCITANE en Provence CEO, Adrien Geiger. Businesses cannot address the challenge of nature and biodiversity loss alone and voluntary business action is not enough. That's why we're part of the Business for Nature coalition... The Business for Nature coalition has published five high-level recommendations and 20 detailed policy asks for governments to accelerate the action needed on nature. The policy recommendations call on governments to urgently adopt policies to: 🌎 Make sure business and finance protect and restore nature 🌎 Ensure natural resources are used and managed sustainably to reduce negative environmental impacts 🌎 Value and embed nature in decision-making and disclosure 🌎 Align all financial flows to a transition to a nature-positive, net-zero and equitable economy 🌎Adopt/strengthen ambitious global agreements to address key nature loss challenges This is an urgent appeal to governments for their immediate leadership to strengthen the policies, incentives and legislation that will drive the necessary business action to halt and reverse nature loss this decade. 🔗 Read the policy recommendations: https://lnkd.in/dYcJkbA

Plan C is Plan C for the environmental movement. The history of Plan B is worth the read alone (or revisit, for those of you that were there). https://lnkd.in/gby2R7Pi Mentioned: Auden Schendler, JERRY YUDELSON, Rick Fedrizzi and so many national environmental nonprofits (Environmental Defense Fund, Rainforest Action Network, Greenpeace, Earth Island Institute, etc.) As for whether Plan C will be effective, one difference on my read between then and now is the extent to which there are internal teams working toward similar ends as well as the external environmental movement, and broader awareness of the genuine business value in sustainability when done well. That doesn't mean any of us grapple with the growth imperative well, and that will continue to be an issue where the company value chain does not involve regeneration and renewable resource use.
