He ran a German motorsport magazine and set the standard for quality journalism. I was grateful as he supported me as I built my Morgan Motor Company import business, British Motorsport Festival and Conferences, and in my role as Interim CEO Group Lotus. He flattered me again by asking me to be a guest on his emerging podcast for my insights on doing business in China. A few points I share, in case you haven’t the time for the interview: My biggest mistake: - building a brand which I didn’t own. Doing business in China: - It’s ultra competitive because Chinese have a mentality of scarcity which means that they are always hungry for every morsel of value in the market. My favourite place in China: - Chang Bai Shan 长白山 ski 🎿 resort in n e China. What I enjoyed most about China: - The heady atmosphere of entrepreneurial opportunities. Who I miss: - The good, honest hard working Chinese with whom I had the good fortune to work build several businesses and friendships. After almost 4 years I have the opportunity to return to China... the world has changed in the meantime, but one thing has remained constant: the REHAU China team continues to be a solid rock in the sea of change! Besides interacting with our venture partners and customers on the ground I will be able to catch up with Matthias Haasler and his team who continue to be a driver of growth and profit not just in Greater China, but within the APAC region. The team has delivered a case-study-worthy performance in terms of resilience and constantly increased performance in the face of pandemic challenges and strong economic headwinds. Increasing productivity while at the same time exploring new business models together with REHAU New Ventures shows the willingness to look ahead despite near-term hurdles. You guys are awesome and make me proud! What can we learn for our business in mature markets? The team has continued to uphold a winning culture that plays complementing strengths and relies on mutual trust to distribute responsibility and get things done quickly and effectively. Diversity of thought combined with a "together we can" mindset is a winning combination! Group-think and putting individual interests ahead of team objectives is a "no-go" and leads to strategic blindness and an atmosphere of distrust.
