In order to reach real equity for Black-led organizations, we need to actually SEE Black-led organizations. Yes, we need strategies, funding, and investment, but most importantly: Black-led organizations need to be seen. 💪🏿 Black communities need to be seen. 🤲🏿 Black PEOPLE need to be seen. ✊🏿 When Sonya Massey was brutally murdered, it took a toll on me because it was yet another reminder that Black lives, in the eyes of so many, are not seen and not valued. Contending with that reality is painful, especially at a time when our votes matter more than our voices. The theme for this year’s Black Philanthropy Month is AfroFutures of Giving. But I kept asking myself: what if there is no future for us to give to? How do we invest in the future of a world that doesn’t invest in us? So when I’m at a loss for words, I do what I always do: create. After reaching out to my dear friend ladidai, we co-wrote this piece, Echoes of Glory✨ . Through this process of grieving and organizing, I realized that the future, while stacked against people in the margins, is also CREATED by people in the margins. That’s my desire for BackBlack—to be a platform for Black changemakers to create and FUND the future they wish to see. This year, I am proud to announce that BackBlack is back and stronger than ever. Today as we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s relentless dedication to civil rights and social justice, those of us working in the nonprofit sector can find powerful lessons in great man’s timeless work and vision. No matter your nonprofit’s mission, here are five MLK-related insights that can impact your work:   1. The Power of a Vision: Dr. King's dream of a racially integrated and harmonious society mobilized millions. A clear and inspiring vision serves as a north star to guide organizations through challenges and motivate donors to contribute toward a shared goal. 2. Effective Communication and Advocacy: Dr. King was not just a visionary but also a master communicator. His speeches and writings did and still do move hearts and minds, fostering a sense of urgency for change. Nonprofits should pay close attention to creating effective communication strategies to articulate their mission, connect with supporters, and advocate for the causes they champion. 3. Ethical Stewardship of Resources: Dr. King's commitment to justice included a responsible and ethical use of resources. Nonprofits should prioritize transparency, accountability, and ethical stewardship of the resources entrusted to them. Demonstrating fiscal responsibility builds trust with donors and ensures that an org's impact aligns with its mission and values. 4. Inclusivity and Unity: Dr. King's vision went beyond racial equality; it embraced inclusivity and unity. Nonprofits should embrace diversity and strive to create inclusive environments. By fostering collaboration among individuals with different perspectives and backgrounds, organizations can enhance their ability to address complex social issues more effectively. 5. Perseverance in the Face of Adversity: Dr. King faced numerous challenges and setbacks, but his commitment to justice and equality did not waver. Staying the course through bleak times and severe hardship is often critical for nonprofits to achieve long-term success. Among other challenges, raising funds to launch and sustain important programs can be extremely challenging. So, like Dr. King, don’t give up. Remember, in the spirit of Dr. King's dream, we can make a difference. Sometimes we can be the difference — beacons of hope, compassion, and transformative action. Understanding disability as an importent part of the diversity mix is essential in creating a diverse work force.

Dr. Akilah Watkins' thoughtful letter on the end of Black History Month reminded me of The Bridgespan Group's data on Black-led nonprofits: "the unrestricted net assets of the Black-led organizations are 76 percent smaller than their white-led counterparts." According to data from Initiative for Strategic Volunteer Engagement, the majority of #nonprofit #volunteer programs are funded through unrestricted assets. If you put those two facts together, a clear implication emerges: to mobilize volunteers, Black-led organizations need our unrestricted support. They are disproportionately pulling from their core budgets to create these programs. Your individual donations (and corporate matching) provide this fuel.
