In response to the ever-changing energy landscape, AzGT has devised an ambitious Reliable Energy Plan to diversify and expand its energy portfolio to better serve its Member Cooperatives. As a critical part of this initiative, AzGT has completed the construction, testing, and commissioning of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for its member cooperative SSVEC. The first of the three BESS units was designed and developed for the benefit of SSVEC, and operations officially went live on June 4, 2024. The BESS unit works in tandem with SSVEC’s 20-megawatt solar panel system to provide storage for the surplus of power produced during the day. This power can then be utilized to better support evening demand fluctuations as the sun begins to set. With a storage capacity of 40 megawatt hours, this system is poised to deliver a more secure energy supply for over 53,000 homes in Southern Arizona. These units are just the beginning of AzGT’s Reliable Energy Plan. Invenergy has launched its tenth battery energy storage system (BESS) in Arizona with the commissioning of the 50MW/200MWh El Sol Energy Storage Center, located near Phoenix. This addition brings Invenergy's total BESS capacity in Arizona to 191MW/623MWh, with an 11th project, Yuma Storage, expected to increase the portfolio to 261MW/903MWh upon completion. All of Invenergy's Arizona projects are in Maricopa and Yuma Counties and are contracted with utility Arizona Public Service - APS. The new storage systems are crucial for managing energy demand, especially during periods of extreme heat. Arizona is becoming a leading market for grid-scale BESS in the US, following California and Texas. And, when you get down to dollars and cents, how should utility customers be fairly compensated for allowing their resources to be pooled and utilized for the entire community's benefit? RMI energy experts Stephanie Bieler, Cara Goldenberg, Avery McEvoy, EIT, Katerina Stephan, and Alex Walmsley teamed up to write a report that addresses all of these questions and more for NARUC (National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners) and NASEO - National Association of State Energy Officials (National Association of Energy Officials) and their DER (Distributed Energy Resources) Integration and Compensation Initiative. According to an analysis published today by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in the U.S. is projected to increase to more than 30 GW by the end of this year. The high penetration of solar and wind projects in California and Texas have spurred a growth in the deployment of battery storage assets (10.5 GW total) between these 2 states. The remaining states BESS deployment total 3.5 GW of installed capacity. "Planned and currently operational U.S. utility-scale battery capacity totaled around 16 GW at the end of 2023. Developers plan to add another 15 GW in 2024 and around 9 GW in 2025...Battery storage projects are getting larger in the United States.
