Last week I had the opportunity to moderate a fantastic panel discussion with Rosie McWhorter, CAMS, CFE, CFCS, CRC, Kasra Zamani, and Mahesh Muthu, hosted by the ACAMS Central Texas Chapter . The crypto industry is rapidly evolving, and so are the challenges it presents in terms of AML and KYC compliance. We delved into these issues, discussing the unique hurdles faced by crypto firms in identifying AML risks. To address these challenges, we explored how industry players are adapting by adopting best practices, leveraging innovative technologies, upskilling people, and fostering collaboration with regulators to create a robust and compliant ecosystem. What a powerful image. Communist China had the opportunity to truly let 100 flowers bloom in April to June 1989. They chose a path of violence to put down these peaceful protests and maintain their authoritarian rule. As of 2024, they have moved closer to a Totalitarian rule as the state has built an Orwellian model of control using technical surveillance. The recent move to introduce a Centrally Banked Digital Currency (CBDC), the Digital Yuan, is another brick in their totalitarian wall where they can observe and control all financial transactions. Their system of social credit scores restricts the activities of anyone deemed unreliable. The ethnic genocide of the Uighurs continue. My heart goes out to my Chinese friends, in China and abroad, (including in the U.S.). China has created a legal lawfare system to force compliance and cooperation with the government instruments of power. We should not be scared of the China that is today, the real challenge to America would be if China let slip the surly bonds of control and allowed freedom in China, which would unleash their true potential. The math, the science, and the engineering, would help solve some of the world's biggest challenges instead of being directed toward maintaining stifling one party rule. The Chinese Communist party and Xi Jinping will not allow this to happen. They are a strategic competitor and while we must continue to thoughtfully engage to prevent, and more importantly, deter a military conflict, we must never forget the true face of this government. This picture is the reminder we need.
