Why is a promotion more than just a new title? A promotion is like receiving a key to a new door—it opens up opportunities for growth and development that weren't available to you before. It signifies that your company sees more in you than you might see in yourself, giving you a platform to prove your worth on a larger scale. This new level of trust and responsibility is a testament to your past achievements and a bet on your future success.

There aren’t many leaders that I respect more than Best Buy’s Senior Executive Vice President, Kamy Scarlett. She’s brilliant, fun, warm, supportive, and has a way to cut through BS without having to wear a rebellious Sons of Anarchy leather vest to do it. She leads with her authentic personality and embraces and celebrates the individual personalities of her team. Kamy knows that being a front-line associate in a retail environment is a tough gig with long hours, disrespectful customers, and tons of direction from head office. Beyond product knowledge, they have to know specials, offers, and have a photographic memory of the binder that outlines the 5000 guidelines that dictate everything from how to bag a box to 60-day return policies. Kamy’s plan was simple. She simply went to her frontline staff and told them to forget all of that. There was only one direction they needed to understand and to put into practice: “Be Amazing”. That’s it. Be amazing. Kamy hired her people based on beliefs and values and expected them to be amazing at their jobs but she tossed away the script and let them deliver “AMAZING” in their own authentic way. It’s simpler, it’s easier to commit to memory, and it’s way more fulfilling which creates a much better experience for the customers AND the staff. When you inspire your people to be amazing, they will be.

Live in the moment. As professionals (specifically pointing at myself here) it’s so easy to get stuck in the challenges or caught up in reaching for the next achievement, that we take way too little time to live in the moment and fully appreciate the work that we’ve done or the challenges we’ve overcome to actually achieve our goals. Instead of celebrating our successes, we shuffle on to the next big thing to check off the list. Challenging you (and mostly me) to take a step back on this Wednesday and remember who you were when you started your career vs who you are today. Honor the bumps in the road and celebrate the wins no matter how big or how small. There’s a good chance when you compare and contrast, you’ll find out you’re actually killing it. And if you aren’t too happy with the person you’ve become (don’t worry, we’ve all been there) take this time to get REALLLL clear on the person you want to be and map out the plan to be them. Xoxo 🤍

"Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results." - Phil Knight Thought I would share this quote from Phil Knight’s memoir, Shoe Dog, as today marks my two-year anniversary in my current role as a first-time people manager. By nature, I am an individual contributor to my core. While my perfectionist & merciless self-loathing (thanks for that one Phil 😉) traits aren’t ideal for my personal life, they have served me well professionally as they push me to accomplish more & more due to my belief that it’s never good enough. But as I’ve learned over these past two years, being a solid individual contributor doesn’t get you very far as a manager - often it actually sets you back as you constantly seek to tell everyone on your team exactly what to do and how to do it. (I can’t be the only one guilty of this… right? Right?!?👀 👀) So, for my fellow first-time managers who were promoted based on their exceptional individual contributions and may be struggling, I share this quote and post. It has inspired me to be more comfortable with not having all the answers; just a clear request of what is needed from my team, and enough discipline to leave them alone long enough to be pleasantly surprised by their results.
