🔋 Gigafactories: Powering the Future of Electric Vehicles Gigafactories are essential for the production of EV batteries, powering hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and BEVs. Coined by Tesla's Elon Musk, the term 'gigafactory' blends 'giga', meaning billion, with 'factory'. As EV adoption surges globally, the demand for gigafactories is rising. These facilities ensure that manufacturers can meet the battery capacity needed. Governments, carmakers, and battery suppliers are actively seeking locations for new gigafactories to enhance local supply chains and boost economies. 🌍🔋 Notable developments include the EU Commission's approval of €837 million in state aid for EV battery production in Spain. Volkswagen is building a gigafactory in Valencia 🇪🇸, Envision AESC in Cáceres 🇪🇸, Nissan in the UK’s Sunderland 🇬🇧, and Tesla near Berlin 🇩🇪. Companies like Northvolt, CATL, and SK On are also expanding their plans, reinforcing Europe’s battery-manufacturing network ahead of the 2027 Rules of Origin legislation. 🚗🔋 The gigafactory boom is crucial for the EV industry and local economies. 🚗🔋🌱 #EV #Gigafactory #Sustainability #Innovation #Manufacturing

Ever heard of a #gigafactory? 👀 Sounds like a sci-fi term, but a key part of the future of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) 🔋 A gigafactory is a large-scale production facility focused on making batteries for EVs, not the cars themselves. As demand for EVs skyrockets, gigafactories are key for maintaining supply chains and driving advancements like solid-state battery technology 🔗 Currently, most of these plants are located in Asia, leading us to rely on imports. However, with the growing popularity of EVs, local gigafactories are emerging across Europe. This shift is not only enhancing innovation on the continent, but also increasing independence in this sector ⚡ Are you familiar with this term? Do you think Europe will become a hub for new gigafactories? 🤔 #Advantech #WeEnable #EV #gigafactory #battery #innovation

What exactly is a #gigafactory? 🔋 It's not just a massive building - it's a specialized facility for manufacturing batteries used in electric vehicles, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. The term combines ‘giga,’ indicating billions, with ‘factory,’ highlighting the scale of production needed to meet growing #EV demand. 👉 The production capacity of a gigafactory is measured by the total energy output those batteries can generate. Currently, most gigafactories are located in Asia, but with the global shift towards Battery EVs, there's a strong push for local gigafactory networks, especially in Europe. New plants are already springing up in cities like Valencia, Sunderland, and Berlin 🌍 Have you ever heard about gigafactories? Or maybe you work in one! Leave comment if you do 😊 #Advantech #WeEnable #gigafactory #battery #innovation

Very interesting comparison on the vertical integration. Thanks Michael Sura'. It comes to my attention that in 2020, the total sale of BEV of BYD is less than 60k. This means the existing Tier1 has no incentive to work closely with BYD on the NEW design. The existing design for ICE may work after little customization. But affordable, I agree with Elon Mask, NO. So if BYD is serious on the affordable BEV, you get to depend on yourself instead of incumbent Tier 1. Once the total production is more than 2m, 3m, or whatever, just like GM spined off Delphi. BYD may do the same. It is just economics.

This explanation of vertical integration in EVs is excellent for educating people. Cost margins would decrease with vertical integration, improving the supply chain in the process. However, this requires a significant capital outlay. In this swiftly growing sector, vertical integration can give OEMs a huge market share if managed properly.

Blue Solutions' $2.17bn Gigafactory to produce solid-state batteries with 1,000 km range French company Blue Solutions, a subsidiary of Bolloré, has announced its plans to construct a gigafactory in eastern France at a projected cost of 2 billion euros ($2.17 billion). This state-of-the-art facility will focus on manufacturing a new type of solid-state battery with an astonishing 20-minute charging time, marking a significant advancement in EV battery technology. The announcement, made by Blue Solutions' CEO Richard BOUVERET, heralds a new era for the EV industry, promising longer driving ranges and drastically reduced charging times compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Solid-state batteries are considered the "holy grail" for EVs due to their potential for longer driving ranges and much shorter charging times. Blue Solutions has already been manufacturing these batteries for Daimler Truck AG's electric buses and is now expanding into the passenger vehicle market with a smaller battery designed for cars, aiming for 1,000 km (621 miles) range. The gigafactory, scheduled to begin production in 2030, will be strategically located in eastern France, near major French and German automakers. Unlike traditional sprawling gigafactories, Blue Solutions' facility will feature modular towers with a smaller footprint and a production capacity of 25 gigawatt hours (GWh).

An interesting post by Michael Sura on the power of #verticalintegration. That seems to me as well a reason why especially the German automotive sector is struggling. And that was already discussed years ago when Tesla was scaling. So when acquiring companies to grow suppliers and OEM should always balance this strategy with buying vertical integrated companies as well. Vitesco Technologies is popping into my mind that was currently acquired by Schaeffler. Wouldn’t it be on basis of the thought of the power of vertical integration more interesting for companies like for example Infineon Technologies (I.e. vertical integration of the power module) or on the other side Volkswagen Group (I.e.vertical integration of the power electronics and motor competencies) to have acquired them? Which other examples could be mentioned? #electrification #automotive #transformation
