"Urban infrastructure and nature in harmony.” Captured this moment on a quiet stretch of road, with the bold architecture in the distance standing tall against the moody clouds. It’s a reminder that progress and development can coexist with the natural environment around us. As we continue to build, let’s focus on creating sustainable urban spaces that respect the balance of nature and innovation. #UrbanDevelopment #Sustainability #NatureAndInfrastructure #CityLife #Wallpaper

Research shows that different gendered use of space starts young – highlighting the need to not only focus on the design of buildings themselves, but to carefully consider how we design public spaces and the spaces between buildings to make our built environment feel safe. Read more about the benefits of embedding design for safety and inclusion in our recently published research paper written by Director Helen Taylor and Head of Rail Andrew Postings. https://lnkd.in/eywhu-kr #SafetyandInclusion #InclusiveDesign #InclusiveArchitecture

One of Perkins&Will favorite types of projects is adaptive reuse. Here are a few reasons why we love it: 1) Sustainability: Repurposing existing structures reduces waste and environmental impact. 2) Preserving Character: It maintains the existing fabric of a place while introducing new, innovative uses within. 3) Technical Challenges: These projects are technically demanding, and we thrive on overcoming such challenges. 4) Unique Quality: Older, sometimes historic buildings offer an intangible quality of space that is difficult to describe but unmistakable when experienced. Read Matt Covall, AIA, LEED AP piece on creative adaptations to learn about the various ways we have repurposed spaces. We will continue to champion these types of projects for all the reasons above. Stay tuned for more on adaptive reuse and creative adaptations throughout the City and beyond. #adaptivereuse #repurpose #reframe #design https://lnkd.in/g4m3YmW8

Thanks for this share, Kristy! Excited that Perkins&Will’s architects enjoy repurposing buildings. When I was designing in Vancouver with Cobalt (now Introba), we always appreciated working on projects with this company. It was when I got back to Cali in 2012 and chose my energy engineering job at Siemens that I discovered it’s our existing building stock that is the 🐷 our energy grid needs to feed. The talk I went to at the Vancouver Public Library in 2006 was only the tip of the iceberg 🧊 with my understanding of the role buildings play in human energy consumption. At the time, it was 50% of our energy resources. Yikes! 😱 Repurposing our existing buildings so they serve what we currently need is an excellent way of managing our resources on 🌍 Spaceship Earth. The biological object we build on (and with) has her limits. If we aren’t mindful with our growth moving forward, she might just kick us off! 🥾 #PlanetaryPriorities #EthicalEngineering #ResourceFullThoughts #ErthlyIdeas

"In the end, our society will be defined not only by what we create but by what we refuse to destroy." — John Sawhill Welcome to a new week with GRN Vision, where we're committed to shaping a sustainable future through innovative design. At GRN Vision, sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a commitment woven into every project we undertake. Our mission is to design buildings and spaces that are not only environmentally friendly but also enhance the well-being of their users. From harnessing solar energy to integrating green roofs, our designs aim to reduce carbon footprints and promote a harmonious relationship with nature. As we continue to push the boundaries of sustainable architecture, we invite you to be a part of this transformative journey. Stay engaged and informed—follow our journey every week as we explore new advancements in sustainable design. Share your thoughts, join the conversation, and help us spread the word about the importance of building a greener future. On Monday this week I attended the NLA's Tall Buildings: The next decade presentation where Tom Nancollas and Tuba Ozbay spoke about the future plans for Tall Buildings in London, and the importance that Sustainability places into designing the next generation of tall buildings. Highlights of the presentation: - Tall buildings should be designed for a longer than 60 year life span, designers need to think of this typology as infrastructure projects - sustainability has made architectural design more honest, by removing all the unnecessary items (like internal finishes) to reduce embodied carbon - The new City of London's 2040 policy plan is meant to be more flexible to allow for more creativity - The sustainability strategy for tall buildings needs to include a holistic view not only focusing on carbon reduction, but also biodiversity and social value #NLATallBuildings #sustainability #tallbuildings RSHP

Renovations currently make up less than 1% of building projects worldwide, according to research published by the Urban Land Institute in 2023. Yet, the growing number of panels on circular principles at COP28 suggests that the tide on single-use buildings might finally be turning. As we work towards more sustainable ways of designing and delivering projects, we asked a group of experts what it would take to embed circular design principles as standard across the built environment. Scroll through for some key takeaways from our recent roundtable: Constructing the Circle, available here: https://loom.ly/snNx1ls Contributors: 🔸Ruth Oates | Buro Four 🔸Martina Concordia | Buro Four 🔸Hugo Dring | Buro Four 🔸Theresa Mohammed | Watson Farley & Williams 🔸Emma Dagnes | Alexandra Palace and Park 🔸Alice Hardy | Global Generation 🔸Aude-Line Duliere | Architectural Association 🔸Eva MacNamara | Expedition Engineering Ltd 🔸Ruth Soria | Knight Dragon Ltd 🔸Julian Bates | Keltbray 🔸Olivia Hack | Sir Robert McAlpine 🔸Claire Dale-Lace | Stanton Williams #CircularEconomy #BuiltEnvironment #ProjectManagement #Sustainability #Renovation #Refurbishment #Reuse
