💡Great behavioural insight for copywriters Patrick Fagan. I wonder – does this mean the present tense is generally more persuasive than both future AND past tense? The reason I ask is this finding totally chimes with that 2023 paper on reviews that Thomas McKinlay unearthed recently: Reviews written in the present tense are more persuasive than those written in the past tense. I.e... ☕️ 'The coffee at this place IS amazing!' Is more convincing than... 'The coffee at this place WAS amazing'. The present version feels continuously true, rather than just true on a one-off occasion. Priming reviewers with ghost input text like: 'What's the coffee like here?' may encourage us to write reviews that others find more convincing. Thinking about this more broadly: 1️⃣ If the present tense is more persuasive than future tense in this tagline... 2️⃣ And present tense beats past tense in reviews... 3️⃣ Could it be that present tense is generally the most persuasive tense to write in? ------ Check out the present-tense reviews paper here: https://lnkd.in/e52am39i Or where I saw it, over on Ariyh

Cancer Research UK recently changed their slogan from the future tense to the present tense - from "we will beat cancer" to "we are beating cancer". Smart move. A recent study found that the present tense is more persuasive for charitable appeals as it is more concrete and urgent.
