Why Donating to Atlantic General Hospital Matters      Atlantic General Hospital, like 98% of the hospitals in Maryland is not-for-profit. This means that any revenue left after expenses are paid, if there are any, goes directly back into our organization. Driven by a mission to serve, rather than profit, it is our goal to ensure that all patients, regardless of financial circumstances have equal access to the healthcare they need. We strive to prioritize patient care above all else, with a holistic approach. We want to treat the whole person, not just the illness or incident that brings them to us. This means that we rely heavily on the support and generosity of donors.     This is where the AGH Foundation comes in. We raise funds to establish new and expand existing services to meet the needs of the community. Support for Atlantic General helps to fuel innovation and excellence in health care delivery. It allows for state of the art technology and equipment, as well as attracting top talent in the medical field. This alleviates the need to travel long distance for essential care, as was the case in the past. Examples of how community support has helped is the presence of the John H. “Jack” Burbage, Jr. Regional Cancer Care Center and the recently opened Gudelsky Family Medical Center, just outside of Ocean Pines.     Being not-for-profit does not mean that the hospital does not collect payment for services. However, it is a common misconception that hospitals are able to operate on the billing for services that patients receive. The funds received from billing are used to provide care and to cover the expenses associated with maintaining a constant state of readiness to address the community’s healthcare needs. When factoring in Medical Staff and Associate recruitment and retention efforts and the operation of expensive, less frequently used services to ensure community access, costs continually exceed revenue generated.     We live in a fast-paced world, where health care costs continue to rise and access to quality medical care remains a pressing concern for many. Donating to Atlantic General Hospital is not just an act of charity. It is an investment in the health and well-being of the communities we serve. Together, we can continue to offer healthcare that is truly accessible, equitable and compassionate for all.

📢 NHS Satisfaction: The Headlines You *Don't* See Sheffield Hospitals Charity is not a campaigning organisation. We don’t lobby for legislative changes or on public policy. But we have a very real, quantifiable and different set of headlines to the ones yesterday about NHS satisfaction. ❤️ We see a daily outpouring of love for the NHS. 🤗 We see the people of #Sheffield give their thanks and money to support the NHS as a direct result of the care they receive. 💷 We exist to put that money where it's most needed across our #NHS. The people of Sheffield are proud people - Yorkshire folk that tell it like it is, call a spade a spade. And I'd suggest that we have a lot of love for our NHS. Ipsos research consistently shows that the NHS is what Britons are most proud of. We, the people, want the NHS - and we're all-in for its founding principles: free healthcare at the point of access based on our needs. Do we want it to be better? A resounding yes! There are a lot of myths and misconceptions that surround all forms of organ and tissue donation, including donating eye tissue. Even though the U.S. has one of the most robust cultures of donation, a lot of people still have concerns. So who are you, the 3% that is donating or the 3% that will join them? 🩸 July 18, 2024 NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER ISSUES URGENT CALL FOR O+ AND O- DONORS Current inventory is at its lowest since COVID-19 shutdown NEW YORK, NY – New York Blood Center (NYBC) has issued an urgent call for type O+ and O- blood donations. This dangerous shortage is impacting local hospitals, and is also a disturbing national trend, with Type O shortages reported across the U.S. The current inventory of type O blood is the lowest it’s been since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further complicating this shortage is a recent surge in blood usage. In the past several days, 7 massive transfusion protocols (MTPs) have occurred across the region. MTPs involve administering 10 or more units of blood to a patient within 24 hours but can often require 50 or more lifesaving blood products per patient, placing tremendous strain on the blood supply. Type O+ is the most common blood type, representing nearly 40% of the U.S. population. Type O- is the universal blood type and is commonly used in emergency settings. A shortage of both types, both locally and nationally, poses serious concerns for our healthcare system, and the need for donors is critical. In addition, the region continues to struggle with the challenges that often accompany the summer months. Seasonal travel, school breaks, and a rise in traumatic accidents during the summer months often strain the blood supply and lead to shortages. NYBC is calling on all individuals with Type O blood to make an immediate donation. “We are appealing to our community to step up and donate blood, especially those whose blood type is type O,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Vice President at New York Blood Center. “Following the recent surge in blood usage, our local inventory is critically low, and we need immediate support to ensure that every patient receives the lifesaving care they need.” NYBC hosts daily blood drives and operates 19 area donor centers to reach donors and meet local hospital needs. Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. With the onset of spring, our thoughts turn to renewal and growth, but it's also a time to consider safety. As the season brings more outdoor activities and gatherings, the importance of having accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) cannot be overstated. Did you know that according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention... ❤️🩹Approximately 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes occur every year in the United States. ❤️🩹More than 800,000 people in the United States die from cardiovascular disease each year, about 160,000 of those deaths occurring in people under age 65. ❤️🩹Heart disease kills roughly the same number of people in the United States each year as cancer, lower respiratory diseases (including pneumonia), and accidents combined. This Fundraiser Friday, we hope to complete our original February goal of raising $3,000 to purchase 2 AEDs. So far, we've already raised over $1,300! AED stands for “Automated External Defibrillator" and it's a portable electronic device used to treat sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm. AEDs are simple to use, even for those without a background in medicine and are frequently found in public spaces like schools, airports, offices and healthcare settings. It’s designed to automatically analyze a person’s heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock if necessary to restore a normal heartbeat. AEDs can significantly increase a person’s chances of survival. In fact, AEDs can improve the survival rate for people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest by up to 75 percent! The purchase of 2 AEDs will help us in our goal of outfitting all Lancaster EMS vehicles with the device.
