The Kresge College Expansion at the University of California, Santa Cruz is a finalist for the AIA Chicago Lerch Bates Inc. People’s Choice Awards, in the Education category, presented in partnership with our friends at the Chicago Architecture Center! Our expansion adds four new buildings—a trio of residential halls and an academic center—which together aim to restore the integrity and community spirit of the original campus while simultaneously opening it up to embrace students of all abilities, the incredible natural ecology of its site, and the larger university community beyond. How can architecture and art drive solutions in our cities? This question was recently explored at BLOXHUB where Madeleine Kate McGowan represented the Garden Caretaker project. Inspired by the White Paper on the New European Bauhaus Economy by Dark Matter Labs, the discussion highlighted how art and architecture can help us reconnect with nature. The Garden Caretaker exemplifies this concept, serving as a bridge between urban living and the existing ecosystem. Read more on the potential of art and the garden caretaker in driving solutions in the cities in this article: https://lnkd.in/dWTB4F3n

Mankind’s quest for verticality has an underexplored dimension: the queasy feeling of vertigo many experience when close to the edge of a sheer drop. Davide Deriu, Reader in Architectural History and Theory at the University of Westminster, London, has taken on the relative lack of research into the subject with an interdisciplinary approach, captured in his book On Balance: Architecture and Vertigo. Come, stand on the edge with us. https://lnkd.in/gHU9FHTA

In exactly one month from now, my book Nelson Goodman and Modern Architecture: A Belated Encounter, will be published by Routledge. In it, I investigate overlooked aspects of both 20th-century architecture and philosophy, and I am particularly honored that it comes with endorsements from heavyweights in architecture, art history, and philosophy, who have kindly read my work. I look forward very much to talking about the book at events in Copenhagen and Aarhus, and beyond, in the months to come. #nelsongoodman #architecturaltheory #architecturalhistory #modernarchitecture #modernism
