𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 Governor Janet Mills yesterday announced that the State of Maine has selected a section of state-owned Sears Island that is reserved for #portdevelopment as its preferred site for a port facility to support the floating offshore #windindustry. The selection of the site follows an extensive public stakeholder process led by the Maine Department of Transportation and Maine Port Authority to consider the State’s primary port development options, including multiple potential sites in the Port of Searsport, the Port of Eastport, and the Port of Portland. The State concluded that the Sears Island parcel is the most feasible port development site in terms of location, logistics, cost, and environmental impact based on input from port and #offshorewind stakeholders, including the University of Maine, and on technical and engineering analyses. 'Over the ditch' in Australia 🇦🇺 1 week left till the public consultation closes on the Bass Strait Offshore Wind Zone: Australia has identified 6 priority offshore wind zones, including the Bass Strait zone off Northern Tasmania. Bass Strait Zone Proposal: 🔹 10,136 km2 area proposed 🔹 Distance from shore: 20-70km 🔹 Water depth: 25-65m 🔹 Wind speeds: average 9 m/s 🔹 Closest port: Bell Bay The site was chosen based on strong consistent winds, proximity to electricity demand centres, and port infrastructure. ⚠️⚠️ScottishPower Renewables East Anglia One North and East Anglia Two⚠️⚠️ The onshore cable routes for both these projects gouge through the fragile cliffs north of Thorpeness and trench 9 km inland to the substation site, the medieval village of Friston. This substation site is currently planned to be 3 TIMES THE SIZE OF WEMBLEY STADIUM and will inevitably grow. Ten communities will be hemmed in by the construction of haul roads, cable routes and substations for up to 15 years and probably more. It is unclear why a coastal area with an important nature-based tourism economy, rich in wildlife, was chosen over a brownfield site more suited to industrialisation. Off the coast of Massachusetts, Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) are developing the Vineyard Wind 1 wind farm, the first large-scale offshore wind project in the U.S. To provide a sense of scale, the accompanying photo depicts a component of a monopile in relation to the individuals working on this project. Observing these images reinforces the importance of safety. The precision and accuracy in the production process of our high-performance softslings are dedicated to the well-being of those workers who face the daily risks associated with handling oversized objects. Glad that Empire Wind 1 and Sunrise Wind projects are back on track. Just a few years ago, these projects were stated to create tens of thousands of jobs in this new industry. New economic benefit commitments above what was originally contracted, including $32 million committed to community-focused investments in New York’s disadvantaged communities and $16.5 million towards wildlife and fisheries monitoring is literally a drop in the bucket for billion-dollar projects. I'm always in support of preserving the environment, but the ratio of the two is disturbing. Investment in people should easily be 10 times the value of wildlife. - There must be full transparency regarding MBE participation. - There must be MWBE participation in all Tiers of these projects. - There must be real participation in pre-development phases of shoreside and offshore work. - There must be real workforce-development opportunities for diverse communities, not just vague references to supporting community groups. - A significant portion of the ships and craft needed to construct and service these windfarms need to be built in NY-NJ shipyards, supporting their growth, workforce and supply chains. In Aberdeen yesterday to support the breakfast meeting for the launch of the OW Ocean Winds Supply Chain Impact Report. As described by OW UK Country Manager Adam Morrison, the report looks "under the bonnet' to showcase 104 Scottish and UK supply chain companies who worked on Moray East and Moray West projects. The specially invited audience also heard from Maggie McGinlay, CEO of Energy Transition Zone Ltd and Aberdeenshire Councillor Doreen Mair who spoke about the impact of the OW O&M base in Fraserburgh Harbour and how it also galvanised an even more ambitious expansion of the harbour that would benefit not only offshore wind but the important existing fishing industry and boat repair and maintenance businesses in the town. The OW Supply Chain Impact Report highlights 15 of the companies and 4 ports and harbours as well as listing all 104 UK supply chain companies. The list includes 64 Scottish companies, 65% of whom are DeepWind members (half of the total 104 companies are members), so it was a great showing for the cluster. Four companies had stands at the event and it was great to see Balmoral Comtec, Clarksons, Helix Robotics Solutions and Utility ROV Services Ltd being able to talk about their roles in the Ocean Winds supply chain. A big thanks to Roger McMichael and Kate Miller of OW for all their hard work on the launch. Other DeepWind members showcased in the report include Siemens Gamesa, JDR Cable Systems, Seaway7, Siemens Energy, Global Energy Group, EODEX, Vysus Group, Robertson Group, Port of Nigg, Port of Cromarty Firth, Fraserburgh Harbour and Buckie Harbour.
