Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 🌎🏹 Celebrated annually on August 9th, this day was established by the United Nations in 1994 to promote and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. The date marks the day of the first meeting in 1982 of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. The day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges that indigenous peoples face, such as issues related to human rights, cultural preservation, and social justice. It also celebrates the rich diversity of indigenous cultures and contributions to global society. Each year, the UN selects a specific theme to focus on, highlighting different aspects of indigenous peoples' lives and challenges. The theme for the 2024 International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is "Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact." This theme emphasizes the unique challenges faced by indigenous groups who choose to live in isolation or have limited contact with the outside world. These communities often reside in remote, resource-rich areas and are highly dependent on their natural environments. The theme highlights the importance of protecting their rights and lands, which are crucial for their survival and the preservation of cultural and linguistic diversity. 🌿 Activities around the world include cultural events, panel discussions, and other educational initiatives aimed at promoting understanding and solidarity with indigenous communities. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #indigenousrights #indigenousvoices #culturalrights

Today, we come together to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples around the world. International Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to honour the resilience, knowledge, and traditions of these diverse communities, and to reflect on the challenges they continue to face. Indigenous peoples have long been the stewards of our planet, with deep-rooted connections to the land and a profound understanding of sustainable living. Their knowledge and practices have not only enriched our world but have also been essential in preserving our natural environment for future generations. However, this day also serves as a reminder of the injustices and struggles that Indigenous communities have endured and continue to face, from the impacts of colonization to ongoing issues related to land rights, cultural preservation, and social equity. It's a call to action for all of us to support Indigenous rights, amplify their voices, and work towards meaningful reconciliation and justice. As we observe International Indigenous Peoples Day, let’s commit to being allies and advocates. Together, we can help build a world where Indigenous cultures thrive and their rights are respected. #internationalindigenouspeoplesday #reconciliation

I proudly acknowledge the United Nations' (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (the Declaration), an international human rights framework which recognises and protects the unique and collective rights of Indigenous peoples across the world. In the Australian context, this instrument relates to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s rights. On this important week of reflection, National Reconciliation Week 2024 (NRW2024), I also acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and I pay my respects to Elders past and present, as well as to all Indigenous Peoples for the courage that you demonstrate in pursuing equality. The #NRW2024 theme, "Now More Than Ever", prompts me to continue to listen first and act second. It is through truth-telling yarns, empathy and bravery, that I will continue to learn about what Elders and communities, desire and need. From respect to engagement, and beyond to unity and sustainable social equity, that is what I strive to achieve between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples. In this era of heightened global conflict, I also reflect on the devastating outcomes in the Ukraine and Israel - both born from a lack of unity, a lack of humanity and a lack of civil rights. Surely, I can turn my powerlessness into action. Surely, I can do better to truly hear local Indigenous Peoples' stories and empower others to make the step changes that are needed to advance unity. "Now more than ever" we need reconciliation. Reconciliation Australia (RA) have done an extraordinary job of providing resources to raise awareness about one of the oldest cultures in the world and the importance of reconciliation.
