The Aakhya Weekly #71 | In search of the perfect workweek Following the call for India’s youth to embrace a 70 hour work week by Infosys Chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy, debate has been sparked on whether longer work hours means higher productivity and output. In order for India to enhance productivity on its path to become the world's third-largest economy by 2030, we must examine the measures crucial to optimize India’s labor force, and longer working hours is not on that list. First, India must focus on manufacturing, which has already been set into action through the "Make in India" initiative. Second, India must prioritize labor mobilization by enabling a more diverse demographic to participate in the workforce. In India, only 24% of women are actively employed, but the potential for substantial GDP growth, estimated at 27%, emerges if the country can equalize female workforce participation with that of men. Lastly, India is poised to reap the greatest rewards from investments in innovation, encompassing research, development, and technology adoption. This will empower the workforce to enhance process efficiency, customize products to meet domestic consumer needs, and introduce homegrown products to the global market, setting India on the path towards becoming a leading economy on the global stage. India has the capacity to enhance labor productivity and become a global economic powerhouse, and with consistent effort from government, businesses, and society, this possibility can become a reality. Post world war Germany and Japan were starting from ground zero, focusing on immediate survival and stability; while India is operating within a fundamentally different framework. They indeed put really long hours of work. The same model can still work in maximizing profits for firms but will it still be the primary route to nation building? The recent statement by Infosys founder Narayana Murthy advocating for a 70-hour workweek has sparked lively debate. While his intent is noble, it's crucial to examine the historical context where such work ethics made a significant impact. After World War II, Germany and Japan were essentially starting from scratch. The focus was on rebuilding destroyed infrastructure and revitalizing their economies. Youngsters worked tirelessly, often clocking long hours to bring their countries back to life. This need for labor-intensive efforts was born out of extraordinary circumstances. In contrast, modern India faces different challenges. Issues like poverty and unemployment require serious attention, but so do matters of social inequality, inadequate healthcare, and environmental degradation. These are complex problems that demand nuanced solutions, often requiring multi-disciplinary approaches. A 70-hour workweek in a corporate setting may not necessarily be the best or only way to address these multifaceted issues. More hours at the desk may not translate into improved social services or better policy decisions. Alternatives to the 70-Hour Workweek 1. Skills Development: Investing time in upskilling can make individuals more valuable contributors to their organizations and the broader economy. 2. Community Involvement: Engaging in community service or grassroots social enterprises can lead to more targeted, impactful change. 3. Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Fostering entrepreneurship can solve immediate problems, create jobs, and spur economic growth. 4. Policy Participation: Active involvement in shaping policies or entering public service can result in sweeping societal changes. 5. Infrastructure Development: Investing in building and improving public infrastructure can not only create jobs but also make long-term contributions to national progress Narayana Murthy's call for long work hours aims to instill a strong work ethic, but there are multiple ways to contribute to nation-building. Let's think beyond just the number of hours worked and consider diverse approaches for creating meaningful and sustainable impact in modern India.

I support N. R. Narayana Murthy's 70-hour work week! It's been over a month now since Respected N. R. Narayana Murthy pledged India's youth to work for 70 hours per week for nation-building, and I fully support it. This kind of request can only come from an individual who himself or herself is committed to making India a developed nation. There are differing perspectives regarding his statements from the business and socio-political domains, but I have yet to come across a successful individual who rejects this ideology. They have all achieved their current status through unwavering #dedication, #perseverance, #hardwork, and #commitment—there is no alternative for these qualities. Those who say they are successful but never think a seventy-hour work week is possible are telling falsehoods. There are two parts to it: one, they just want to stay out of the competition; second, they think they are successful even though they aren't because successful individuals don't need to tell others they are successful since success speaks for itself. Additionally, the best way to attain a work-life balance is to prioritize spending quality time with family over quantity. Everybody should consider what they will leave for their future generations rather than spending more time with them; after all, they all want to live in a beautiful, developed country, and modern technology helps make it possible. I would like to appeal to all of you, not only our young people, to put in your best effort in utilizing cutting-edge technology to transform India into a powerhouse and support our dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of having a developed country by 2047. Since we live in a time where we can do in a single generation what other countries have taken many generations to accomplish, it is imperative that we all behave and act responsibly. Thanks. 🙏 🙏 🙏
