WHAT ARE THE OLYMPIC VALUES? Wi Tru Sranan is very proud of the team representing Suriname in Paris this year and wishes the delegation good luck and unforgettable experiences. It might be a good idea to take a moment to consider the values behind the Olympic Movement and Games (info: IOC website): EXCELLENCE Striving for excellence and encouraging people to be the best they can be. RESPECT Showing respect in many different ways: respect for yourself, the rules, your opponents, the environment, the audience, etc. FRIENDSHIP Celebrating friendship, which is quite unique to the Olympic Games – an event that brings together people from so many different nations. The aim of the Olympic Movement is to contribute, through these values, to building a peaceful and better world, by educating young people through sport practiced without any form of discrimination and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. GO SURINAME TEAM! MAKE US PROUD! #witrusranan #Leadership #normenenwaarden #values #changeforthebetter #eenheid #leadershipdevelopment #suriname #unity #waarden #olympics World Values Day UK Values Alliance Values 20 Group

As preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris intensify, a significant focus has been placed on environmental sustainability, particularly the revitalization of the iconic River Seine. Over the years, the Seine has been subjected to pollution and neglect, impacting both the ecosystem and the city's overall aesthetic appeal. However, in light of the upcoming Olympic Games, concerted efforts have been made to clean up and restore the river to its former glory. In collaboration with environmental organizations, local authorities have implemented various initiatives to improve the water quality of the Seine. These efforts include innovative waste management systems, stricter regulations on industrial emissions, and promoting eco-friendly practices among residents and businesses along the riverbanks. The aim is not only to create a healthier environment for aquatic life but also to enhance the experience of visitors and athletes during the Olympics. The impact of sporting events on the environment is a topic of growing concern, as large-scale competitions often result in increased waste generation, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. However, initiatives like the clean-up of the River Seine demonstrate how proactive measures can mitigate the negative effects of such events and leave a positive legacy for the host city and its residents. Sporting events have the potential to bring about positive change, inspiring sustainable practices, and raising awareness about environmental issues. By leveraging the global platform of the Olympic Games, cities like Paris can showcase innovative solutions to environmental challenges and set a precedent for future host cities to prioritize eco-conscious initiatives. As the countdown begins to the 2024 Olympics, the revitalization of the River Seine serves as a beacon of hope for a cleaner, greener future in Paris. Through ongoing efforts and continued commitment to sustainability, the legacy of these games can extend far beyond the sporting arena, leaving a lasting impact on the environment and the community as a whole.

What if we would use the Olympic Games to end the fighting? #Paris2024 I received a message today in my inbox to remind the International Olympic Committee – IOC of the tradition of PEACE for the Olympics How about a #Ceasefire not just in #Gaza but also in #Ukraine and in the various African conflicts....is this call to action by the UNGA enough? The resolution for the observance of the Olympic Truce for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 was formally adopted by the UN in November last year, calling for the Olympic Truce to be respected from seven days before the start of the Olympic Games until seven days after the Paralympic Games. “I solemnly appeal to all Member States to demonstrate their commitment to the Olympic Truce for the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and to undertake concrete actions at the local, national, regional and world levels to promote and strengthen a culture of peace and harmony based on the spirit of the Truce,” said UNGA President Francis. “I also call upon all warring parties of current armed conflicts around the world to boldly agree to true mutual ceasefires for the duration of the Olympic Truce, thus providing an opportunity to settle disputes peacefully.” The idea that the Olympic Games are a call for peace is rooted in the ancient Olympic tradition, which originated in ancient Greece. The modern Olympic Games, revived in 1896, also emphasize the promotion of peace and unity among nations, in line with the vision of their founder, Pierre de Coubertin. Here's a more detailed breakdown of the cultural and historical context: Ancient Olympic Games Origin: The ancient Olympic Games began in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BCE. Truce (Ekecheiria): During the ancient Olympics, a truce known as the "Ekecheiria" was declared. This truce allowed athletes and spectators to travel safely to and from the Games, promoting a period of peace among the frequently warring Greek city-states. Modern Olympic Games Revival: The modern Olympic Games were revived by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 with the goal of fostering international understanding and peace. Olympic Charter: The Olympic Charter emphasizes the Games' role in promoting a peaceful society and mutual understanding among nations. Symbolism: The Olympic rings and the Olympic torch relay are symbols of unity and peace. European Influence Cultural Impact: European culture has had a significant influence on the development of the modern Olympics. The ideals of peace and international cooperation are deeply rooted in European intellectual and cultural traditions. Diplomacy: European nations have historically used the Olympics as a platform for diplomacy and promoting peace. https://lnkd.in/e_qUzQ-u What do you expect from the #IOC? What from the #UNGA?

🌟 The Evolution of Olympic Gold Medals: A Journey Through Time 🌟 The Olympic Games have always been a celebration of human achievement, bringing together the best athletes from around the world. One of the most coveted symbols of this global event is the Olympic gold medal. However, did you know that the composition of these medals has changed significantly over time? 🏅 1908 Olympic Games: The gold medals awarded during the London 1908 Olympics were made of 60% gold. These medals were a true representation of the athletes' hard work and the precious nature of their achievements. 🏅 2024 Olympic Games: Fast forward to the Paris 2024 Olympics, and the gold medals now contain only 1% gold. This change reflects broader trends in resource management and the increasing value of gold as a precious metal. The shift from 60% to 1% gold content in Olympic medals highlights not only the evolving nature of the Games but also the economic and environmental considerations that come into play. While the medals' material composition has changed, their symbolic value remains as strong as ever. At Nicolor South Plant, we understand the significance of gold and its changing role over time. As one of the largest privately owned gold processing plants in South Africa, we are committed to sustainable practices and innovative approaches in precious metals processing. Our advanced technology and agile management allow us to process diverse ore materials, contributing to both economic growth and environmental stewardship. Join us in celebrating the history of Olympic gold medals and the timeless value of gold. 🌍💪 #Olympics #GoldMedals #History #Sustainability #Innovation #NicolorSouthPlant #GoldProcessing #PreciousMetals #EconomicGrowth #EnvironmentalStewardship

Visual Capitalist published the all-time #ranking of #Olympic gold medalists by country. Do you prefer the 'official' or the 'common sense' one, which I have put below? There are two differences only: - 1 - the ☭ Soviet Union and 🇷🇺 Russia are added together, as are 🇩🇪 Germany and ☭ 🇩🇪 East Germany. - 2 - according to Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, aggregating those countries also results in a different number of gold medals. - 🇺🇸 U.S. 1,061 - ☭ Soviet Union + 🇷🇺 Russia 608* (instead of 542, if adding up those reported by Visual Capitalist) - 🇩🇪 Germany + ☭ 🇩🇪 East Germany 438* (instead of 354, if adding up those reported by Visual Capitalist) - 🇬🇧 Great Britain 284 - 🇨🇳 China 263 - 🇫🇷 France 223 - 🇮🇹 Italy 217 - 🇭🇺 Hungary 181 - 🇯🇵 Japan 169 - 🇦🇺 Australia 164 - 🇸🇪 Sweden 147 - 🇫🇮 Finland 101 - 🇰🇷 South Korea 96 - 🇳🇱 Netherlands 95 - 🇷🇴 Romania 90 - 🇨🇺 Cuba 84 - 🇵🇱 Poland 72 - 🇨🇦 Canada 71 https://lnkd.in/diztQJiU #gold #medals #olympics

The independent prosecutor, in his interim report into the World Anti-Doping Agency’s handling of the 23 positive Chinese swimmers in 2021, found ‘no irregularity’, no evidence to suggest interference or meddling, and that the chances of successfully appealing the contamination scenario at the Court of Arbitration for Sport were ‘if not nil, at the very least almost non-existent’. For those who want to be able to quote the actual report rather than the headlines that will come from it, there is a link obtained in the WADA post below. Given the anti China sentiment around this story, there will be few in the media that report the facts as they currently are, and many who will now criticise the interim report from the independent investigator because it has not identified any fault on WADA’s handling of the case. WADA President, Witold Banka, said, “Now that it has been confirmed…there was no impropriety connected to WADA’s handling of the case, the Agency will consider with external legal counsel what measures can be taken against those that have made untrue and potentially defamatory allegations. These allegations have been extremely damaging to WADA’s reputation and to the confidence and trust that athletes and other stakeholders have in the Agency and in the global anti-doping system.” #WADA #doping #antidoping #China #swimming #Olympics #Paris2025 #WorldAquatics https://lnkd.in/gbDy5TmT

Paris Olympic officials appear to have had insufficient advice regarding recreational water quality in an urban river like the Seine. Exclusive reliance on E. coli as an indicator of water quality is a flawed approach in this environment. E. coli is very useful as an indicator of when contamination has occurred, but its much less useful as a measure of when the water quality has recovered. This is because E coli are relatively wimpy organisms and die-off relatively quickly, compared to more environmentally robust pathogenic microorganisms, which may be present. Deciding that its ‘safe to swim’ on the day that E. coli levels drop to below a specific threshold is a decision that is uninformed and based on flawed assumptions. If Olympic officials weren’t receiving this advice, then consultation with technical experts was also inadequate. https://lnkd.in/gf8YUNU5

These are your answers to our recent Olympic Games #poll 📊 In our latest LinkedIn poll, we asked whether you believe the Paris 2024 Olympics can significantly reduce its carbon footprint compared to previous games. According to your responses, only 10% of respondents believe it will have a significant impact. 🇫🇷♻️ Majority said that it would only have somewhat of an impact (47%). We also observed that a significant portion of our respondents were skeptical about the Paris 2024 Olympics achieving a substantial reduction in its carbon footprint compared to previous games, with 27% seeing little impact and 17% seeing no impact at all. The Paris 2024 Organising Committee, aims to make it the greenest Olympics ever, aiming to half the carbon footprint of London 2012 and Rio 2016. 💨 London 2012's footprint was 3.3 million tonnes, while Rio 2016's was 3.6 million tonnes. Thank you for participating in our poll! If you missed this round, don't worry—we'll be doing these regularly so you can continue to share and compare your votes. 🙌 #Paris2024 #Olympics #OlympicGames #RoadToPari#SustainableOlympics #GreenGames #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Europe
