EMS Week is the time we honor the entire EMS profession and its importance in protecting the safety and health of our citizens. Our country’s EMS professionals serve in a broad range of roles, from providing highly skilled care in an ambulance, to serving as educators, to practicing community paramedicine, to conducting research. These individuals are dedicated to improving emergency medical services on numerous levels and are helping to advance the vision of EMS Agenda 2050, that of a data-driven, evidence-based, people-centered EMS system. May 19-25, 2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of EMS Week. This year’s theme, “Honoring Our Past. Forging Our Future,” reminds us to acknowledge the foundational work of those who came before us, while also striving to build and lead the EMS system we envision for our future. In the 50 years since we’ve been celebrating EMS Week, our profession has made enormous strides in pre-hospital care, data collection, emergency management and community-based healthcare. We’ve developed comprehensive EMS systems that are ready for any kind of emergency–seven days a week, 24 hours a day–whether or not that includes going to the hospital. EMS.gov

It’s #EMSWEEK2024! 50 years ago, a presidential proclamation called on the nation to support efforts to improve emergency medical care across the country. It also established the first national EMS Week, a tradition we proudly continue today. Much has changed since 1974, yet there is still much we can learn from those trailblazing professionals who helped EMS evolve into the sophisticated branch of medicine it is today. Their dedication, commitment and sacrifice inspire us to take bold steps of our own, to continue to seek out ways to better serve our patients and our communities. This year, we celebrate EMS Week by honoring our past—by taking a pause to recognize the contributions of each generation, the people who dreamed that we could save more lives and have less suffering, and then found ways to make it happen. EMS Week is never just about the past, however. It’s also about inspiring the EMS professionals just starting out and the young people who haven’t even discovered EMS yet! It’s about learning from the challenges and building on the successes of the last five decades. It’s about forging our future—a future in which the next generation has the tools they need to deliver compassionate care and alleviate suffering in communities everywhere. #insidemchd

Albertans deserve a continuing care system that will ensure access to the highest quality of care that is available when and where they need it. As we continue working to ensure that care is available, we have signed an Aging with Dignity funding agreement with the federal government, which represents three per cent of Alberta’s continuing care budget in 2024-25. To meet the growing needs of an aging population and ensure the future of the province’s continuing care system, Alberta’s government has committed $1 billion over three years to transform continuing care in Alberta. The transformational work underway in Alberta includes supporting initiatives that will shift to deliver more care in the community, enhance workforce capacity, increase choice and innovation, and improve quality of care within the continuing care sector. We have also allocated $654 million in funding over three years for the Continuing Care Capital Program in order to improve access to continuing care spaces and reduce emergency department wait times by freeing up more beds. Our ongoing work and investments mean that Albertans will receive the right supports

We are excited to invite you to Dr Guy Peryer's talk at our upcoming conference, focusing on the evolving landscape of eol doula practice within Integrated Care Systems in England. This session will delve into the implications of the Ambitions Framework for improving palliative and end-of-life care, and how it presents both new opportunities and challenges for doulas. Talk description: The move to Integrated Care Systems in England and the adoption of the Ambitions Framework to improve palliative and end of life care has provided new opportunities and challenges for doula practice. Doulas have been teaming up and working alongside local authorities and healthcare providers. This new way of working is being monitored to find out if it is having a positive influence on the doula experience and the level of support offered to clients. This talk will introduce a method called Contribution Analysis. This type of analysis is set in a learning context, it represents a useful method to consider whether we're moving in a preferred direction. It will help Doulas ask key questions that can be answered in reflective diaries. If we ask similar questions when reflecting on our practice the answers can potentially be joined together to form a collective approach to tracking the progress of the doula movement. #Endoflifedoula #EoLDUK #Deathdoula #deathtalk #eoldukconference24 #conference #deathanddying

How easy it is to share germs between one another? The theory of six degrees of separation suggests we are separated from someone on the other side of the world by five persons (intermediaries) between us. I our daily interactions with friends, relatives and co-worker we connect numerous times; in doing so this creates multiple opportunities for germs to 'hop' from surface to surface, and person to person via your hands. To demonstrate how easy this is, we made a short (fun) video to mark awareness for #worldhandhygieneday this month, our IPC colleagues at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Our clinical colleagues and other wider community in IPC work diligently to raise awareness and help keep hands and surfaces clean #environmentalresearchlaboratory #infectionprevention #healthcare #handhygiene #infectioncontrol #cleanhands #UCLH #UCL @IPC_UCLH

Delhites' National Initiative in Palliative Care (𝐃𝐍𝐢𝐩𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞) recently conducted an impactful training session on Palliative Care and Basic Life Support (BLS), emphasizing that care goes beyond clinical interventions—it's about compassion, empathy, and providing dignity in life's most challenging moments. The session included hands-on CPR training, equipping healthcare professionals with the vital skills needed to act swiftly and effectively in emergencies. But more than that, it was a powerful reminder that palliative care isn't limited to hospitals—it begins at home. By nurturing an environment of understanding and support within our families and communities, we can extend this compassion throughout our world. Together, let's build a future where every patient receives the care and comfort they deserve, ensuring no one feels alone in their journey. Kudos to DNipCare for leading this essential initiative and empowering healthcare teams to make a difference where it matters most!
