WRA's Severiano DeSoto testified for the passage of SB212 last week at the State Capitol. SB212 was the product of a year and a half long stakeholder process directed by WRA’s Severiano DeSoto and the Colorado Renewable Energy Siting Coalition to develop a siting policy that centers conservation and community values while helping to accelerate the build out of utility scale wind and solar projects. ☀️ Why is this so critical? Building the clean energy projects necessary to meet our ambitious climate goals will require a significant amount of land for wind and solar energy production, the largest driver of new land use change in the coming decades. One of the reasons we developed Generations for Generations was to address the challenges that major renewables projects have with community acceptance. In this blog https://lnkd.in/g4GABiXp, Christy Goldfuss of the US-based Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Michelle Moore of Groundswell, Inc. address the challenges of community engagement and how when local opposition blocks a renewable project only 13 per cent ever reach completion. 'Generation for Generations’ is engineered to enhance stakeholder and community engagement strategies by leveraging state-of-the-art technologies, tools, and resources. In a landscape where public understanding of renewable projects and technologies is limited, and projects are often situated in scenic areas, countering misinformation and fostering engagement is crucial. This week, we partnered with Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce Inc to help stage the #HedlandForum2023 in South Hedland. Our partnership allowed us to extend an invitation to community partners, Pilbara Community Legal Service Inc. and Care For Hedland Enviornmental Association, to attend the Forum with us. As session sponsors discussing 'Decarbonisation and Emerging Industries in the Pilbara,' our Senior Manager Customer Solutions, Jonathon Mizen, joined a panel alongside regional industry leaders including BHP, Fortescue, and the Co-Chair of First Nations Clean Energy and Emissions Reduction Advisory Committee. Jonathon addressed some of the challenges that Horizon Power faces as we work to transition the energy landscape in the Pilbara to a sustainable, low emissions future. His discussion highlighted the criticality of transmission infrastructure and energy storage alongside scale and distributed renewable energy resources. With the region making up over half of our emissions, the decarbonisation of the Pilbara through common infrastructure, increased renewable generation and battery storage supports both the State’s and our 2030 emission reduction goal. A strong theme throughout Jon’s presentation was that it is crucial for us to address the complexities of increasing renewable energy generation while taking into account cultural, environmental, and economic sensitivities. We're very proud to announce that EchoPanel®'s acoustic panel collection has achieved independent carbon neutral certification through Climate Active. Taking the next step in our decarbonisation journey, we have neutralised EchoPanel®’s carbon emissions from cradle-to-gate, including international distribution. For a product to be carbon neutral, it means action has been taken to reduce and remove as much carbon from the atmosphere as is produced by the product during the various stages of its lifecycle. An example of our action has been to triple our solar production, drastically reducing our dependence on fossil-fuel derived grid energy.
