Connected, energised, and whole—these words describe how I felt after having the privilege of collaborating with Lani Morris and Christine Hamilton for a Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) webinar yesterday evening. We presented the use of Map of Meaning International as a tool for self-care at the webinar, which was attended by over 200 members of PACFA. What an incredible life-giving experience it was for me as we opened up the black box of meaning to help nourish and sustain the work of those in the helping profession. Affirming how the MOM is: 🌀 Able to unpack what is meaningful in a very practical and grounded way  🌀A powerful and versatile tool for reconnecting us to congruent and nourishing ways of being for ourselves and those around us. 🌀A reflective process that works even if participants are not visible or interacting with the facilitator 🌀and able to open up generative conversations about what truly matters Thank you to the Older People Interest Group of PACFA for hosting and supporting us. I am so excited to be providing a workshop on Advocacy For Behavioral Health Professionals at the next Colorado Professional Liaison Association meeting in August. CO-PLA is group of business development and marketing professionals, working in the field of behavioral health, that recognize the need for supporting on-going collaboration to serve those suffering from mental health and substance use disorders. Here's the very exciting summary they wrote about my workshop - I hope I can live up to the hype! "In today's dynamic healthcare landscape, the role of behavioral health professionals is more crucial than ever. This presentation explores the vital importance of advocacy within this field, emphasizing the need for professionals to actively engage in advocating for their discipline, their clients, and the broader community. Behavioral health encompasses a spectrum of disciplines dedicated to improving mental health and well-being. However, the field faces numerous challenges, including stigma, funding disparities, and evolving healthcare policies. Effective advocacy is essential not only to address these challenges but also to promote systemic change and support the growth and recognition of behavioral health services. This presentation hopes to be a call to action, empowering attendees with the knowledge, tools, and inspiration to become effective advocates within their spheres of influence. By amplifying their voices and championing for change, behavioral health professionals can contribute to a future where mental health support is equitable, accessible, and valued across all sectors of society." Reducing Restrictive Practices ❣ When people are not heard or given a chance to participate in decisions about their care or lack fulfilling activities and social interaction, frustration and distress can build up, leading to the use of restrictive methods. However, are we familiar with the negative, and long-term effects of physical restraint on people’s mental health and overall well-being, such as: 🔴 Physical and emotional trauma 🔴 Anxiety 🔴 Depression 🔴 Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 🔴 Increased aggression and resistance As a provider, it’s our job to ensure that all our systems and processes are aligned with the best practice of safeguarding, deprivation of liberty and the Mental Health Act. Improving the lives of autistic people, people who have a learning disability, and people living with mental health, is central to everything we do. This involves working closely with the Reduction Restraint Network, Loddon School and the National Institute for Excellence to ensure we are using the most up-to-date value-based models of care. Value-based approaches encourage people to make choices about their own lives. By building skills and reinforcing positive behaviours, we can support people gain greater independence, confidence, and control over their lives. When seeing the person as a whole, addressing not just behaviours but also emotional, social, and physical needs, we can create a more stable and supportive environment for all.
