The USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship crucial for rapid deployment of United States Marine Corps forces, is facing mechanical issues, leaving the US Navy uncertain about the timeline for repairs. The ship encountered problems shortly after its deployment to the Indo-Pacific and had to return to San Diego. Currently docked at US Naval Station San Diego, the Navy is still determining the most efficient approach for executing the repairs. The repair process might be further complicated by the congestion at San Diego ship repair yards, as the piers capable of accommodating the USS Boxer are occupied by other warships. There is also speculation about the possibility of sending the ship to a shipyard in Oregon or Washington. This situation highlights a significant challenge for the Navy, as the ship maintenance backlog has grown to $1.8 billion, with deferred maintenance on critical systems becoming increasingly common. The USS Boxer, which has experienced various mechanical problems in recent years, plays a crucial role in projecting Marines ashore. #USSBoxer #Navy #ShipRepair #MechanicalIssues #AmphibiousAssaultShip #IndoPacific #MarineForces #NavyMaintenance #NavalOperations

Great PLA Navy Carrier analysis..... what do you mean - no night operations ? limited "blue water" operations.... First, some people might think that the PLA Navy has fully achieved parity with the United States Navy in terms of overall capability. While China has made substantial advancements and increased the size and sophistication of its navy, it still faces challenges in areas like carrier operations, global reach, and experience in sustained naval operations. Second, there's a misconception that the PLA Navy's new ships and submarines are all top-tier and state-of-the-art. Although China has introduced many modern vessels, not all are on par with the most advanced ships from other leading navies, and there can be variations in quality and capability across their fleet. Third, some may believe that the PLA Navy has mastered all aspects of naval warfare, including joint operations with other military branches. In reality, integrating naval operations with air, land, and cyber capabilities remains complex and is an ongoing area of development for the PLA. Lastly, there's a misconception that the PLA Navy can project power globally with the same reach as more established navies like those of the United States or even Russia. While China is expanding its presence, its ability to sustain operations far from its shores is still developing, and it does not yet have the same level of logistical support and overseas bases.

The US's ability to project naval power for global security and defense is critical. We are a maritime nation with our existence dependent upon naval power. Article I, Section 8, Clause 13 of the US Constitution mandates the maintenance of a Navy. We must prioritize rebuilding our naval power, including warships, commercial fleets, yard capacity, and a robust shipbuilding workforce. Our sovereignty relies on a well-equipped and trained navy. https://lnkd.in/eQMykd5x.

☑ "Aircraft Carriers: Still Indispensable" (July "Proceedings", U.S. Naval Institute) ☑ Excellent restating I believe of the case for large carriers below from Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet from May 2021 to April 2024 and Commander, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command since May 2024. ☑ Now, Admiral Paparo would write that, wouldn't he, given his own immense "Top Gun pedigree". But so I suggest would the equivalent officers in the Royal, Chinese, Indian and French Navies if afforded/permitted the same public platform. Collectively, are they right or wrong in their (silent) advocacy? ☑ and now there's a UK defence review on! https://lnkd.in/egzfdtbC #usni #aircraftcarriers #navaldoctrine #shipbuilding #geopolitics #strategicdefencereview #royalnavy #usnavy #defencepolicy

New Guidance for Amphibious Readiness The US Navy and United States Marine Corps have signed off on new guidelines to ensure the readiness of the amphibious ship fleet. The "Memorandum of Understanding on Amphibious Warfare Ship Terms of Reference" was created after a "deep dive" ordered by the service chiefs earlier this year. The new guidelines are designed to maintain amphibious readiness even after the current leadership retires. According to CNO Adm. Lisa Franchetti and Commandant Gen. Eric Smith, the document will "ensure consistency and uniformity in Navy and Marine Corps amphibious force planning, assessment, and operational mission execution." This move follows testimony from the service chiefs emphasizing their "locked shields" on the importance of amphibious ships - a shift from past disagreements. It also reflects the Navy Secretary's changed messaging, after previously implementing a "strategic pause" on certain amphibs. #Navy #MarineCorps #AmphiousShips #MilitaryReadiness #MilitaryModernization #AmphiobusOperations #NavalWarfare

The future of Canada's navy is taking shape with the River-class destroyers, a fleet set to redefine our nation's maritime combat power. This ambitious project is a historic investment in the Royal Canadian Navy's capabilities, ensuring the protection of Canada's waters and continued contributions to international naval operations. Based on the British Type-26, Canada has significantly modified the combat systems to future-proof the ship and make it more interoperable with our allies and NORAD. This is the best overview of the class that I've read in the context in allied naval renewal. What do you think of Canada's approach?

Interesting article in War on the Rocks regarding a US Navy Reserve. In an Australian context both the Navy and Air Force have limited reserve components - plenty of scope to expand service to citizen sailors and aviators and harness greater talent and generate additional capability as a result. #readynow #futureready #reserves #twicethecitzen

Noting Taiwan potentially faces a host of threats this ASW platform's RCS looks classically modified for Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles but not Anti-Ship Ballistic Missiles- visually. Which allegedly the Houthis have launched in the Red Sea? When will we see a ship laid down that addresses the whole ASM threat set? Minimising reflecting surfaces wrt threat angle is the #1 rule. How different will it look vs how will the crew do their duties on deck? Just a thought.
On 16 January 2024, #Taiwan started construction of a new light frigate for the Republic of China Navy (ROC Navy or Taiwanese Navy). The Marine Commandant, Gen. Eric Smith, has stated that a new classified memorandum focused on amphibious ship readiness will have a lasting impact even beyond his tenure and that of Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti. This memorandum emphasizes the importance of preparing amphibious ships and serves as a reminder to all personnel to prioritize readiness. Despite previous concerns about disagreements between the US Navy and United States Marine Corps, the memorandum demonstrates their alignment and commitment to addressing readiness issues together. Gen. Smith also highlighted that while amphibious warfare is a significant mission for the Marines, they recognize the challenges faced by the Navy in other shipbuilding areas. This memorandum aims to record their agreement and ensure a shared understanding of requirements and training for amphibious ships. By emphasizing the significance of amphibious readiness, the Marines aim to address past concerns and maintain a strong and prepared fleet. #MarineCorps #AmphibiousReadiness #Navy #MilitaryLeadership #DefenseReadiness
