[MY COMPANY IS GOING PRIVATE] When you write it down and say it out loud, it seems like someone announced, "The company barbecue will be next month on Saturday." Except for the small fact that a change of this magnitude makes line staff a little angsty. That might be too light. How about nervous, worried, and scared $#!less. Yes, that's more accurate. The questions tumble out of your brain automatically. How's this going to affect us? Will there be layoffs or job cuts? I've heard private equity firms part businesses and sell off the assets. What's going to happen with our division? What's going to happen to me? Uncertainty, fear, and doubt are my first feelings. However, the move to becoming a private company again is slated to take months to finalize. I don't have any control or influence over the process. No one really knows how things will change until things change. I do have prospects to call on. I do have some software to sell. I do have a quota that I'm committed to hitting. At least for today, I'm going to focus on those activities. I may wake up on Monday freaking out as my brain tries to do some 4-dimensional analysis calculating every permutation of possible outcomes. But on Monday, I'll have to remind myself of what I thought today. Focus on what I can control!

Very much looking forward to being back out in LA end of this month. It’s hard for me to see what’s going on in the entertainment industry. An industry crying out for leaders with vision but beset by short termism and a follower mentality. The archaic models of old simply don’t work anymore. And I remain unconvinced by the pathway chosen, the result of which is leading to mass layoffs, impending consolidation and less players in the market. This has a ripple effect. It doesn’t just hurt the blue chip companies but the smaller businesses who rely on its economic health in order to earn a living. Scott Galloway interestingly has started comparing Hollywood to Detroit. Two cities over reliant on a singular industry. I’m desperate for Hollywood to find its way but we have to overcome short termism, quarterly earnings reports and get back to building trusted brands (Disney, I’m looking at you old friend). I see only one winner here and it’s big tech. One thing is for sure, more consolidation is on the way. I’m ok with that if (a) we are building towards a sustainable business model with growth and jobs in mind and (b) it acts in the best interests of the consumer. I’m far from convinced that’s the case here…

With the current state of our industry, layoffs continue to be a reality for far too many. This has reminded me of a phrase that became a baseline for me: People. Products. Profits. It's important to note that the order of these words matters quite profoundly. Putting people first means prioritizing the well-being of employees, customers, and other stakeholders. Without people, products and profits are irrelevant. By investing in our people, we can create a culture of trust and collaboration that leads to amazing products and ultimately, increased profits. The best gaming companies I've ever worked for were the ones that didn't just talk the talk. They put people first in their business plans, strategy and actions. Let's remember that our success as an industry is not just about the bottom line. It's about creating a sustainable business that values and invests in its people. Only then can we sustain continued, long-term success.

When I graduated from Texas Tech University, I went to work for Southwest Bell in 1976. Back then, if you went to work for Southwest Bell, you had employment for life.   Then came the AT&T breakup.
