Thought leader | Change maker | Keynote speaker | Supporting the transformation of Australia's food system
We've been working with local government in #foodsystem change since we founded Sustain: The Australian Food Network in 2015. This is hot off the press, unpublished research - a significant sample of 41 local governments across Australia. Key findings: - Senior Leadership (Executives and Councillors) are not prioritising food systems. Reasons for this include lack of clear policy direction from state and federal governments, and lack of resources - Most Councils have some (52%) or moderate (13%) experience in food systems. Only a very few (3%) have no experience at all, and a minority (13%) have strong experience - Priorities for Council staff in food systems are a) building deeper relationships with community and b) developing a circular economy - Councils are not hugely confident if asked to develop a food system strategy - 5.2 out of 10 was the average rating across respondents Food systems transformation is not going to happen overnight - but it must happen if we're to deal with growing food poverty, unsustainable land use practices, the climate emergency and the tremendous burden of chronic disease, driven by the fact that a staggering 40% of Australians' diets now consists of ultra-processed foods. Many local governments around the country understand this and have created long-term food systems strategies and plans to begin to address it. They include: Cardinia Shire Council City of Melbourne City of Sydney Merri-bek City Council Banyule City Council City of Greater Bendigo Yarra City Council Mornington Peninsula Shire Central Goldfields Shire Council City of Casey They are supported by leading health agencies like Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth). We need many more to begin this journey if we're to meet the challenges of this decade and the years ahead. Last month, we asked Councils across Australia to tell us about their efforts to transform food systems. Here’s what they told us... 🍊 🍃 The findings are timely. To support Council staff and all food system champions to seize this moment for action, William Angliss Institute and Sustain are hosting Shaping Victoria's Food Future: A Symposium for Collective Action (Tues 9 April – in person & online). Framed by two current food security inquiries before the Victorian parliament, (following major reports by similar inquiries at the NSW and Federal levels), this event will gather food system change-makers to discuss how we use this crucial moment for top-down action. Shaping Victoria's Food Future: A Symposium for Collective Action 🗓 Tue 9th Apr ⏰ 9:30 am - 2:15 pm AEST 🏢 Angliss Conference Centre 📍 Level 5, 555 La Trobe St, Melbourne 🎟 LIMITED SPOTS - DON'T MISS OUT : via Humanitix 🎧 Online Tickets also available. https://lnkd.in/ggYfi5Pm

Do you live to eat or eat to live? Regardless, food systems play a tremendous role in each of our lives. And with #ClimateChange, we'll need to "plant differently, grow differently, and consume differently", in the words of Professor Timothy Lang from City, University of London's Centre for Food Policy. Food security – it’s important! So is teaching students to be self-sufficient on how to grow their own nutritious food. Recently, I hung out with Food Ladder's founding CEO Kelly Zoeller (McJannett) MBA to learn how Food Ladder is addressing food security in remote and Indigenous communities. https://lnkd.in/gVc8rxHV #agritech #foodsecurity

🚨🚨food safety should always be a priority in your food and beverage operations 🚨🚨 Here are some really great food safety pratices when in dought Cook, clean, chill, and separate - these are the four vital rules for handling and preparing foods safely. Also Keep high-risk food at 5 °C or below ❄️or above 60 °C 🔥to avoid the temperature danger zone and food poisoning. Store raw foods 🍗🥩below cooked foods. Store food in suitable, covered containers. 🫙🫙Avoid refreezing thawed foods.
