It's World Environment Day! Sustainable Skies World Summit celebrates World Environment Day as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of protecting the environment and to take meaningful action towards decarbonising the aviation sector. Last month, we hosted #SSWS24, which welcomed leaders from the global aerospace industry for two days of informative discussions, valuable insights, and networking opportunities centred around shaping the future of sustainable aviation. Whilst we covered a range of vital topics, our mission is still ongoing... We look forward to welcoming everyone again this July for #FIA2024, where sustainability will remain a key focus of the event! Together, let's work towards achieving #NetZero! 📲 https://lnkd.in/e7k3_ivU #WorldEnviromentDay

Sustainability is yet again another major theme here at Farnborough Airshow as it remains of critical importance to the #aerospace industry, with key aircraft and aero engine manufacturers making big commitments around achieving #netzero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. So, we’re pleased that the Decarbonising the Midlands Aerospace Cluster programme - a study which is exploring how supply chain companies in the Midlands could achieve these ambitious targets - has been gaining pace throughout the year. The programme which is led by the MAA and funded by the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero via Innovate UK, has been focusing on: ✈️ Accelerating the supply chain's maturity in emissions reduction and reporting. ✈️ Preparing the supply chain for customer requirements and regulation changes. ✈️ Outlining a decarbonisation strategy for the region's aerospace cluster. Over the last few months, by working together with all the partners - ITP Aero, Collins Aerospace, Arrowsmith (part of ASG Group), G&O Springs, Helix, and Technoset Ltd. - we have made great progress both strategically and in terms of the practical solutions being developed. We’ve been carrying out extensive research with the supply chain to understand the electric and natural gas consumption in the sector as well as where the supply-chain is on its emissions reduction (and recording) journey. We’ve been trialling different approaches to most effectively obtain carbon footprints for individual products (separating them from the footprint for a whole organisation) as this is a legislative requirement for certain commodities under the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), with the UK soon to follow. We have also investigated a number of tactical solutions to help reduce emissions such as minimising the carbon footprint of packaging; businesses in close proximity supplying excess heat for use as energy; and recycling rare-earth magnets. At a strategic level, we’ve held two engagement events which focused on the future needs of customers and regulations, case-studies from the supply chain and opportunities for support and funding. Now we are developing strategy recommendations, an outline of which will be shared with DESNZ later this month. Look out for details on how you can participate in a survey soon so your company can play a part in developing this important decarbonisation strategy! #MAAFIA2024 #FIA2024 #FIA24 #FIA #FarnboroughAirshow #FarnboroughInternationalAirshow #AerospaceInnovation #aviationindustry #aerospacetechnology #UKIndustry #aerospaceindustry #aerospaceindustries #aerospacemanufacturing #aerospaceengineering #advancedmanufacturing #advancedengineering #ukmanufacturing #ukengineering #manufacturingindustry #manufacturinguk #engineeringuk #ukmfg #sustainableaviation

✈️ The global #aviation industry has set an ambitious target of achieving #netzero flying by 2050. Yet, the road to reaching this goal is fraught with challenges, particularly concerning the industry's substantial #carbon footprint. 🌎 Accounting for at least 2% of global #CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), aviation's impact on #climate change is undeniable. High-altitude emissions exacerbate #globalwarming, making #innovation essential in tackling this pressing issue. Harnessing digital technologies and fostering innovation are pivotal in developing sustainable solutions to mitigate aviation's environmental impact and pave the way for a net-zero future. 🗣️ At #FIA2024 next week, thought-leading sessions will be dedicated to accelerating discussion on #sustainability and focusing on the importance of collaboration across global sectors. But what more can the industry be doing to act right now? Please share your thoughts? Source: https://lnkd.in/eXptUrWE #NetZero #AviationIndustry #Sustainability

🌍 “Decarbonisation is our licence to operate” - Julie Kitcher, Airbus 🎤 At the forefront of the Sustainable Skies World Summit 2024, industry leaders converged to propel the vision of hydrogen-powered flight, crucial for achieving net-zero emissions in aviation, which accounts for more than 2-3% of global emissions. Shashank Nigam ✈ suggests this is more like 22% by 2050. 🔹 Julie Kitcher, Airbus’ Chief Sustainability Officer, delivered a powerful message, emphasising the need for concrete actions toward hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035. Airbus plans include a commercial narrowbody aircraft with about 100 seats and operational ranges of 1000-2000 nautical miles, aiming for a program launch post-2026/27 downselect. Kitcher highlighted the ambitious project of establishing 37 hydrogen hubs, underlining a commitment to overcome infrastructure, certification, and regulatory challenges with a proactive stance: “Let’s not say it’s impossible.” 🔹 Brian Moran of Boeing discussed derisking strategies in aviation, from the 787 EcoDemonstor advancements, adding learning potential of liquid hydrogen fuel, learned from their Madrid research center and historical innovations like the Phantom Eye. 🔹 The conversation also included insights from Sean Doyle of British Airways and Shai Weiss of Virgin Atlantic, who discussed the pragmatic timelines and challenges of scaling hydrogen for large aircraft and long-haul flights. 🌐 With a collective focus on the critical decade ahead, the panel underlined that the actions we take by 2030 are pivotal for meeting the 2050 Net Zero goal. As Julie Kitcher aptly put it, “What we do by 2030 matters, as we have to increase the pace to achieve Net Zero. 2030 is the day after tomorrow - 2050 is the day after tomorrow and the day after that!” Join us in supporting this transformative journey towards a sustainable aviation future. The opportunity to act is now, and it’s up to us to take it! #SustainableAviation #HydrogenPower #NetZero #InnovationInFlight #Airbus #Boeing #BritishAirways #VirginAtlantic #ZeroE #SSWS2024
