Can commercial road transport fleets overcome the 'chicken and egg' scenario holding back electrification? We asked experts from the OEM and energy sides of the equation to find out: https://lnkd.in/en2wFxch Nearly two-thirds (64%) of fleets believe the energy infrastructure needed for emissions reduction is currently not robust or reliable enough to support their operations [1]. This situation undermines not just the business case for EV truck adoption, but also the commercial viability of further investment in the charging infrastructure itself. So, how can this be resolved? Our latest Q&A article sees Aleid van der Wiel, Head of Public eMobility & Power at Shell Commercial Road Transport, and Matthias Schlagenhauser, Senior Product Manager Depot-Charging Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus SE, share their insights, exploring: ⚡ The challenges holding electrification back 🔌 The importance of strategic charging infrastructure 💡 Why collaboration between OEMs and energy suppliers is essential [1] Shell. Internal research: Decarbonisation in Transport. June 2024 - Based on a quantitative survey of 377 businesses across APAC, EMEA and the Americas. I'm excited to share the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a notice of intent to fund projects that would provide innovative research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of concepts for delivering charging solutions for trucks. The opportunity also supports approaches for load management and delivery of grid services that alleviate grid capacity challenges at charging installations for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles. The SuperTruck Charge program will focus on demonstrating technologies to accelerate the widespread buildout of the charging infrastructure necessary for battery electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks, focusing on both hubs concentrated near ports, warehouses, and other logistics operations, as well as truck stops/travel centers along key freight corridors. This is a part of a bigger, administration-wide effort to decarbonize the movement of freight: https://lnkd.in/emqapbDQ

🔛 At the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam we demo value chains of future energy systems, and we are proud of the newest asset at the campus: a new Megawatt Charging System (MCS) which is integrated in our microgrid and green H2+E value chain, a project lead by my colleague Rogier Schoon. 🔋 Electrification is one of the solutions for hard-to-abate sectors like industry and heavy duty transport. With the dual use MW-charger, #Shell brings a new product to the market that allows our clients to decarbonize their fleet and supply chains 🔗 See what this looks like, how it works, and what the potentials are in the video below 👇 Implementation at scale still has some challenges and together with our #members at the #open #campus we are tackling these: we look into overcoming net congestion constraints, simulating loads and flows, and plan the placement to overcome supply/demand in this product line. 🚀 The future looks bright!
At Shell, we’re always looking for ways to improve fleet charging infrastructure, to create a charging experience that is as fast, convenient and simple as possible. So, we’re proud to be able to introduce you to our new Megawatt Charging System (MCS), engineered by SBRS GmbH. This system was launched in collaboration with Shell’s Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam - a hub where leading organisations work together to tackle the world’s biggest energy challenges. The new dual purpose megawatt charger marks a significant leap forward for businesses looking to electrify their heavy-duty vehicles, thanks to its numerous benefits: ⚡️ Speed: eTrucks with batteries up to 1MWh can fully recharge within 2 hours* 🚚 Compatibility: The universal charging arm complies with MCS standards and includes a second combined charging system (CCS) adapter, making it compatible with a wide range of vessels, vehicles, and battery types. 🔌 Efficiency: The MCS will be controlled by an energy management system to deliver valuable efficiencies by spreading energy consumption over the day in a smarter way 👉 Watch ETCA’s new video below to discover the key role the MCS can play in the electrification of heavy-duty transport. #Electrifiction #ElectricTrucks #EnergyTransition *When charged via the MCS connector; charging speeds can vary depending on factors like battery condition, ambient temperature, concurrent energy use and energy losses. Maximum continuous rating of the MCS connector is 3,000 Amps.

🚚⚡ Exciting news in the world of sustainable logistics! Shell has just unveiled a new game-changing innovation at the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam—a Megawatt Charging Station (MWC) for electric trucks! This is not just any charger; it's set to revolutionize how we power our fleets, allowing a Volvo truck with a 540kWh battery to charge fully in less than an hour. Now that's fast! Having had the chance to experience electric vehicle charging conveniences and inconveniences firsthand, I'm amazed at how this kind of rapid technology could solve many logistical headaches. Integrating this power into a micro-grid powered by 3,600 solar panels is an impressive feat, balancing sustainability with the high energy demands of modern transportation. However, it's essential to consider all options, as the industry's needs are diverse. Strategies vary widely, with companies like Daimaker Trucks incorporating electric models and others exploring hydrogen or swappable batteries. What are your thoughts on this technological diversification? Do you think rapid charging solutions like the MWC will edge out other technologies, or is there room for all in our greener future? Let’s engage in a conversation about the future of transport and energy. Share your views on whether electric or hydrogen holds the key to sustainable trucking. 🌍🔋🚛 #SustainableTransport #GreenEnergy #ElectricVehicles #Logistics #Innovation #TechnologyTrends #Shell #VolvoTrucks #DaimlerTrucks

💡Saft Battery Energy Storage Systems to decarbonize data centers! On June 5 and 6, we attended the DataCloud congress in Cannes, France. The event brought together senior executives in the digital infrastructure space and Hervé Amossé, Executive Vice-President of ESS at Saft, had the opportunity to speak about a project that represents one of Saft's sustainability pillars: helping our customers reduce their environmental footprint. ♻️ The main challenge of this first-of-its-kind project was to implement a battery-based microgrid solution allowing our customer to substitute the diesel generators located in its data center in Sweden and to move to 24/7 clean energy. This was made possible by our lithium-ion Intensium® Max solution. 🔋 One of the benefits of this product and our various energy storage solutions is that they contribute to the decarbonization of industrial activities - always under the highest safety, reliability and robustness requirements. #WeEnergizeTheWorld
