If female representation in the tech industry progresses at the same rate as we have over the past five years, it will take until 2060 to achieve 50/50 parity in the industry. 🚀Last Friday I was very fortunate to attend the WeAreTechWomen Level Up Summit 2023, diving deep into discussions on advancing women in tech careers! 🌟 This year's summit was a focused on intersectionality, bias elimination, and the role of AI in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I). Here are my top 3 takeaways: 1️⃣ AI's Role in DE&I and Addressing Bias in Emerging Tech:The discussions around AI's impact on DE&I were eye-opening. AI mirrors human biases as it's built on public data. Understanding and mitigating biases in GenAI systems are critical to prevent perpetuating social inequality. Kanika Seth and Tori Roberts insights on bias in emerging tech showed how unrepresentative data leads to biased outcomes. Exploring ways to credit diverse cultures and educating a broader audience about tech's potential are pivotal steps toward mitigating biased practices. 2️⃣ Leveling the Playing Field:Jacqueline de Rojas CBE keynote on intersectionality shed light on the unique challenges faced by intersectional women in tech. Lack of diverse perspectives stifles innovation. Role models are crucial—"We cannot be what we cannot see." Emphasising visible role models is vital for inspiring the next generation. 3️⃣ Sponsorship over Mentorship:The difference between sponsorship and mentorship and the importance of having a sponsor who advocates for you. Having someone willing to put their reputation on the line, open doors to new networks, and speak up for you even when you're not in the room is key for career growth. Studies show a 40% increase in career advancement likelihood with a sponsor by your side. I really enjoyed attending the summit with some amazing PwC UK women in tech and meeting phenomenal leaders in the industry. Ten years ago, I started an International Women’s Day event in London for our partners. Our goal? To learn, support and celebrate the women in the room, while inspiring the next generation. ✨ Fast forward a decade, and Meta has similar events all over the world in New York, Philippines, Singapore, Germany, Sweden, India and Poland. This is just a small highlight from our NYC and London celebrations, where we discussed how important it is to have the support of other women, especially in the workplace, and especially in that critical step up to manager. That jump is the biggest obstacle women face on the path to senior leadership, and it’s even harder for women of colour. I know, without a doubt, that where I am today is only made possible because of the efforts of other women who helped me along the way. Which is why our IWD theme for 2024 is Together We Flourish — because it’s true! But our collective success is not a given. We must sustain the amazing ecosystem of women in the workforce and continue it into the next generation. Luckily, there are so many ways to do just that. Mentorship. Building internal leadership opportunities for women. Coaching. But it’s also as easy as reaching out and lending a hand to help a woman up to the crucial next step in her career. So, this IWD, my question to you is this: How can you lend a hand and help another woman on her path to success? Last night I attended the annual Startup Grind Women's Summit, as part of #SGWomen's month. 🌟 The theme - Women in #AI. 🌟 Thanks so much to the fascinating and inspirational female panel - all of which have come from backgrounds unrelated to AI - for sharing their insights and experiences. Key learnings from the event include: 🌟 AI is an elevator. It is an extension to our learning capabilities. 🌟 AI still has an image problem due to lack of diversity and collaboration. 🌟 The tech industry needs more female role models. 🌟 And it needs to be seen to support female leaders. Although events like this are invaluable it frustrates me that in 2024, the tech industry still has a reputation for being a bit of a boys’ club with only 29% of the UK tech industry being women. If the industry doesn’t take a proactive approach to change, this imbalance is not expected to close until 2120. Don't get me wrong, since I started working in #techpr, the industry has unquestionably made progress, but there’s much more to be done. Empowering women in tech requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both individual and systemic barriers. Here are some successful strategies (thanks techUK) for fostering gender diversity and inclusion in the tech industry: 🌟 Inclusive hiring practices: Implementing blind recruitment processes and diverse hiring panels can help mitigate bias and promote equal opportunities for all candidates.   🌟 Supportive work environments: Cultivating inclusive cultures where women feel valued, supported, and respected is paramount. Providing mentorship programs, leadership development opportunities, and flexible work arrangements can contribute to a more supportive environment.   🌟 Visibility and representation: Highlighting the achievements and contributions of women in tech through mentorship programs, speaker series, and recognition initiatives can inspire the next generation of female technologists and challenge stereotypes. Shaping Tomorrow’s Digital Landscape through Transformational Leadership!
