As the District continues its efforts to protect the Weeki Wachee River, the public should be aware they may see District staff and contractors working in and along the river, including the portion deemed a springs protection zone. The District regularly conducts important work that helps protect the Weeki Wachee River. These activities are critical in supporting the District’s mission to protect our spring systems. For example, data collected for decades at the Weeki Wachee River is used by the District and other stakeholders to make critical management decisions, some of which support Florida laws. The benefits of this work have tremendous public value because they ultimately help protect the ecology of the river. Brooks Lamb, a former conservation project manager with The Land Trust, recently published his second book, Love for the Land: Lessons from Farmers Who Persist in Place through the Agrarian Studies Series at Yale University Press. According to Lamb's website, the book, "elevates the virtues of imagination, affection, and fidelity—concepts promoted by farmer-writer Wendell Berry—and shows how they motivate small- and mid-scale farmers to care for the land, even in the face of adversity." Water is life. If you have plenty to drink, you tend not to notice. If you have to walk miles every day to get water to carry home, like most of our Kenyan friends do, you plan your whole life around it. Many of our friends have only dirty groundwater to drink that is shared with animals. Women and girls mostly carry the water for their families, and this task can keep girls from going to school. Walking for miles alone to get water can also be dangerous, especially for young girls. With our Luo partners, Straw to Bread continues working on ALL the ways to provide water security: drilling deep boreholes, rainwater harvesting, water filters, and even trucking water in during the dry season or droughts. Glad to see that the speed restriction is being re-evaluated. I am an avid outdoorsman, boater and fisherman, and conservation is a high priority because like most of us, I want to continue to enjoy these passions. I hate to see a problem solved with a knee-jerk solution like slapping a 10 MPH speed limit on just about the entire eastern seaboard. In my humble opinion this would have far reaching and detrimental effects on multiple industries from boat builders and marine power manufacturers to the sportfishing industry. Hard to sell a 50ft center console with a 5-pack of 500R's on it or that new Viking 80 with 5,000HP and 50kn cruise speed. Nobody wants to be involved in a vessel striking a whale, but I also don't want to see broad-stroke restrictions, once you allow government to implement something like this it is hard to walk back. And they don't work so well anyway - See link below from American Sportfishing Association for results on a 10 year study of the west coasts MPA's - 124 of them, areas of the open ocean that I can't fish. "The recently completed 10-year review by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, as well as numerous scientific papers, suggest that hopes were misplaced. The review concludes “statewide and regional trends across habitats showed no difference in biodiversity inside compared to outside MPAs.” https://lnkd.in/gKRbCPFU I want to see some technology solutions here like advancing Omni-sonar, and will be following closely. Time to put the mic down, step off the box and go do some yard work LOL #Yachting #Boating #Sportfishing #Sandiegoboating
Thursday represented a win for boaters, marine life and coastal communities as the House Committee on Natural Resources passed H.R. 8704, bipartisan legislation sponsored by U.S. Reps. Earl. L “Buddy” Carter (R-GA) and Mary Peltola (D-AK). The legislation represents a critical step forward in preventing NOAA’s flawed vessel speed rule from going into effect, and identifies bipartisan, viable alternatives to solve a complex conservation issue. During the committee hearing, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) said NOAA’s harmful vessel speed rule would “…have a massive economic impact on communities that can least stand this impact.” Watch his remarks below, and learn more about the legislation here: https://lnkd.in/eQxXUZAn

TRCP applauds Senators Hickenlooper and Moran for their leadership on The Water Project Navigators Act. The legislation builds on successful efforts in Colorado to provide critical investments in enhancing local capacity to increase the pace and scale of water projects benefiting both fish and wildlife and the hunting and angling community. This much-needed bill will work to ensure federal resources aimed at addressing our most pressing water resource challenges are made more readily accessible to community-based watershed organizations, Tribes, rural areas, and other historically underserved communities.
