This week, we spoke to Matt Friel, our Milk & CSR Director, to find out more about our 2024 Sustainability Progress Update. As we heard from our CSR Manager Tracey Heming-Wilson, there are so many achievements and measurable impacts to celebrate across the business – as well as learnings to build on and advice to share with others. The Update is an opportunity for us all to reflect on just how far we’ve come, while looking to the future and our commitments across, Climate, Product & Packaging, Animal Welfare and People, as we integrate sustainability practices into everything we do.
🐄 From your POV what are the biggest achievements over the past year?
The launch of the Sustain program, which brought together the work we have been doing with our farmers over a number of years on sustainability and sets clear targets for the future. Through this I had the pleasure of attending some of the Development Group meetings, where attendees share best practise on key sustainability topics, and saw first-hand the passion and expertise of our farmers and the real progress they are making.
👪 Which element of the SPU has had the most impact?
For me, it’s the incredible work we have been doing in the communities that we interreact in, and depend upon. We have continued to support FareShare UK for the 7th consecutive year, donating 107.9 tonnes of food, and raised nearly £60k for Anthony Nolan since 2021, which is enough to fund c.1.5k people joining the stem cell register. And of course, retaining our Gold Status in the GroceryAid awards!
🤝 What are the biggest challenges facing the industry/business?
We have traditionally worked in an industry where relationships have been transactional and where the rewards have, at times, been uneven. If we want to accelerate change we will need each step of the supply chain to work together, creating deep and collaborative partnerships.
♻️ Which area of the SPU are you proudest of?
We have been working on developing recyclable packaging solutions at our UK sites for several years and I’m proud to say that 78% of our packaging is now recyclable by design, with the progress we have made at our soft cheese plant at Lubborn a particular highlight. We know that there is still more to do, especially with flexibles, but we are determined to deliver on our commitments.
📍 What is your advice for anyone starting out on a sustainability journey?
This is a journey, you will not know all of the answers but the most important step is the first one. Understand your strengths, the areas that could be improved and engage the experts in your business to develop and deliver targets. Don’t lose sight of the destination, there will be set backs and plans will need to be adapted as you make progress and deliver change… but the results will be worth it!
