Stephanie Maiolo's links to elite sport – both as an athlete and in management - are opportunities young girls and women dream of. She says belief is the first step to securing success.
Earlier this month we sat down with the football operations manager ahead of her second Touch Football World Cup.
🤔 How do you support & encourage young Talent to thrive?
Access to opportunities is often a challenge.
💯 Young people need to try out new things.
💯 They need to explore and work out where their talents are.
💯 Giving them opportunities allows them grow & build in confidence.
Rugby can sometimes be a challenge for some to try.
😬 It's not played at that many schools.
😬 It's a complex, contact sport with risks from concussion.
😬 It's eco-system doesn't always provide an inspiring future.
👏 Although England Rugby women's team have done a fantastic job recently of inspiring young girls to play - winning 3 grand slams in a row yesterday 👏
Over the past year it's been brilliant to have around 10 new players join our U15s squad at Tring Rugby Union Football Club.
🏉 They've wanted to come along and play with their mates.
🏉 They've had an enthusiasm and energy that has been infectious.
🏉 They've grown considerably as players in terms of skills and confidence.
Picture: Taken from the Harrow RFC 10s development festival last weekend.
👏 Well played lads - it's great to see how far you've come.
🙏 Thanks to all the coaches in our squad - for being there week in week out to support the growth and development of our squad.

From Paris with Love
In our work with leaders and organizations around the world, we have found that nothing remarkable will happen for them unless they take an uncomfortable risk. It is as simple as that.
Same for you: unless you are willing to be uncomfortable to take on a new challenge or speak up at a meeting when you see something wrong or have an idea you think might help or ask someone for help, or hold someone accountable, the list goes on - unless you are willing to endure discomfort, you will not learn, change, grow and deliver in new, different and better ways.
We see the same in Paris. These athletes have risked so much to get here and compete here. They have risked having their hard work and lonely hours not pay off if they fail to qualify (and remember there are far more athletes who didn't make it here than are competing here).
Once here, the world is watching and they risk the social pain associated with not performing as well as they would have hoped. If they are a higher profile athlete and considered a medal contender, they risk people on social media assailing them for 'choking under pressure' (witness what people are saying about Jamal Murray of the Canadian mens basketball team who did not have his best game when they got upset by France in the quarterfinals).
Having worked with athletes over a number of Olympic Games, I can tell you how inspiring I find these athletes on so many levels, but especially when it comes to risks. One area that should not be missed is the interpersonal risk the best ones do to build a team.
It is hard to build a high performance team. It will not happen if people on the team 'play it safe' and don't take risks to build connection and trust. If team members do not name inconvenient truths, for example, about what is not working on a team, then that team will not build the level of intimacy required to stay together when pressure turns up the heat.
One of the teams that has impressed me the most this Olympics is the beach volleyball duo from Canada of Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson (yes, a bit of a Canadian bias here).
They have obvious talent: Brandie being one of the best 'blockers' in the world and Melissa one of the best 'defenders'. But what they have done to build chemistry on the team is really impressive. They so clearly have each others back, even when one or the other is not performing as well as they would like.
And they have been tested here in Paris: they struggled though the competition where they dropped two pool games, meaning they had to come through a repechage or 'lucky loser' route to get into the playoffs. They faced pressure; nobody turned on the other and they persisted through.
And, they now find themselves in the gold medal final against number one ranked in the world, Brazil! I could not be more proud of this team.
Go 🇨🇦!

In the competitive world of international sports, the bond between javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem stands out for its camaraderie and sportsmanship. Despite being rivals, they exemplify the true Olympic spirit by supporting and uplifting each other.
Their friendship teaches us valuable lessons applicable beyond sports:
- Prioritizing collaboration over fierce competition
- Embracing mutual growth instead of zero-sum mentality
- Nurturing relationships beyond immediate objectives
Their actions remind us that success can be achieved by lifting others up, not tearing them down. Let's emulate this spirit of camaraderie in our professional endeavors, fostering a culture of support and cooperation in our workplaces and industries.

Hard Work, Dedication, Collaboration… Success.
Evy, Poppy, and Arielle, better known as the ‘PowerPuff Girls,’ along with 23 other remarkable young female Rugby athletes from Gleneagle Secondary High School, took home the Regional Trophy.
Just look at their expressions—these young athletes are inseparable. Sports can bring out the best (and sometimes the worst) in people. This photo from yesterday’s win captures the raw emotions that fill your heart as a parent and a coach. These are the bonds and lasting memories that these young athletes will cherish for the rest of their lives.
What does this have to do with business? Everything. Value-driven behaviors on the field translate into life beyond the pitch and into the workforce. Put in the hard yards, dedicate yourself to your craft, collaborate with trust, share in the wins and the losses, and most of all, embrace your teammates and love life.
So, tell me that creating a player/employee-centric organization focused on long-term development can’t change the world, one game at a time... It’s about being transformational, not transactional.
Proud Rugby Dad.

This is beyond disturbing and embarrassing.
There is no place for dishonesty and manipulation.
Cheating in sports fundamentally undermines the core principles and values that make sports meaningful and respected.
Cheating in sports is antithetical to the essence of sportsmanship.
It undermines trust, devalues true effort, talent and meritocracy.
This highlights a bigger problem in our world - the lack of accountability that we hold leaders to which sends a message to the world on what we tolerate as a society.
We need bolder stances to drive moral and ethical standards in sports and in business.
Canada should have had their opportunity to play at the Olympics taken away.
If you feel the need to cheat, then you don't deserve to play.
It is a privilege to even play on a world stage such as this.

Investing in your people leads to great sense of team. If you haven't counted, but there are a lot of Americans competing at Wimbledon 2024. They are all taking points out of the other countries' players and that makes it exciting for Americans watching. Do companies take the time to wait for the future successes of their people? It is hard to say how patient companies are when investors are at their front door.
Team sports are easy to get behind. Company employees, however, are more like tennis players, spread out in different departments with their own strengths. If those at the top decide to invest in building their people, then like the American tennis player group today, they will see the rewards recognized from the outside and from within. Investors will be happy too and will continue to come back. A company has to be patient, as rewards don't happen instantly. They happen at the right time.

In the sports industry, competition and collaboration go hand in hand to ensure the success of the sport as a whole.
This delicate balance of competition and collaboration is what makes the sports industry so fascinating! 🤩
Teams and athletes are not only competing against each other, but they're also competing against themselves.
They're constantly striving to improve their performance, break records, and achieve their personal bests. 🤌🏽
At the same time, they're also collaborating with coaches, trainers, and other team members to achieve these goals.
