Drug development is a time-consuming and costly process, typically taking an average of 12-15 years for a drug to reach the market. A range of AI tools is now revolutionising nearly every stage of drug development, offering significant potential to accelerate the process and reduce the costs, thereby reshaping the pharmaceutical industry. These tools harness machine learning algorithms to analyse vast datasets, identify potential drug candidates much faster than traditional methods, and optimise trial designs to improve success rates. This expedites the otherwise time-intensive process and positively impacts the cost involved in drug development. By leveraging AI, it is possible to bring effective treatments to market more swiftly and efficiently. This technological shift not only streamlines operations but also holds the potential to drastically change the pharmaceutical industry, making drug development innovative and less prohibitive. Let’s understand this process of drug development where AI tools provide critical support. #Turacoz #AIMW #AI #drugdevelopment #medcomms

A really interesting read in Pharmaceutical Journal Publications by Rachel Brazil spotlighting some exciting ways #AI is being used and investigated in #Pharmadevelopment. Key points include: • Many companies, including start-ups, are leveraging AI to provide routes to new targets and in 2023, 46 AI-discovered drugs reached phase II and III clinical trials. Will they open the floodgates to approval for AI-discovered drugs? • Benevolent AI’s platform connects structured data from clinical and chemical databases, and unstructured data taken from the scientific literature. It's CSO said this gives them “an enormous hairball of interconnected facts” which would be “way too fast for a human to navigate.” • Most large pharma companies have engaged AI in their drug discovery pipelines, though they may not be sharing the extent of use due to IP issues around the patentability of AI-discovered drugs. However, getting data prepared is still an issue they contend with. • The use of AI in clinical trial design is gaining momentum, with companies like GSK using AI to stratify patient populations and design clinical trials that are more likely to succeed.
