The next time someone asks you to name a Black inventor from the 21st century – say Dr. Thomas Mensah - a pioneer in fiber optics manufacturing and communications systems. "Without my co-inventors, the internet wouldn't work because we invented a laser-based fiber optics system that allows everybody to send a picture to someone else's cellphone. Without that invention, we could not send any Instagram pictures, no Facebook. So we led Facebook, Google, Instagram so that those things could happen. Before we did it, everything was using copper. You could stand in front of an ATM for what seemed like eight hours, but now you go in quickly because of our invention," said Dr. Mensah. https://lnkd.in/giJj9mRk Dr. Mensah was born in born in Kumasi, Ghana. He received his PhD (Chemical Engineering) in France. In the 1980s, he worked at Corning Glass Works, NY, and his improvements to the manufacturing process of fiber optic cables which significantly enhanced cost-efficiency. In one invention, he increased the manufacturing speed from 2 meters a second to 20 meters a second, bringing fiber optics costs to the same level as copper, thus making it economical to replace copper cables with fiber optics media around the globe e.g. U.S. Patent No. 4531959 (Method and apparatus for coating optical fibers) https://lnkd.in/gTFxHMgb Later at Bell Laboratories in 1986, he led a program that developed the first laser-guided weapons for the US Department of Defense guided missile program. This program enabled the development of missiles that travel at the speed of sound (Mach 1). US Patent No. 5035169 (Guided vehicle system) https://lnkd.in/gRCRgU-9. Dr Mensah died in Kumasi, Ghana, on 27 March 2024, at the age of 74. At Collision 2024, it was clear that Black innovation continues to thrive, and is being nurtured by dedicated teams at these incredible organizations: Black Entrepreneurship Alliance; Black Founders Network; Federation of Black Canadians; Nobellum; Black Opportunity Fund, DMZ, Tribe Network; African Impact Initiative and BlackNorth Initiative. #blackinnovation #startups #ipstrategy #intellectualproperty

Happy Black History Month Two years ago, we produced a series called “Amplify Our Voices,” a docu-series showcasing black start-ups and black entrepreneurs, sharing their journey of entrepreneurship. We wanted to share the many perspectives from various industries from our participants and the community of founders. It's a beautiful piece highlighting the various ups and downs of entrepreneurship and what better time to resurface it than now? As a Black start-up and independent film company, we, have had our journey and obstacles of scaling as a business. We understand the importance of building a media and marketing presence and the struggles for businesses of color to thrive without this in place. We hope to continue to share these stories to spread the amazing work that these companies do in their communities and inspire current and future entrepreneurs. We also encourage you to celebrate Black History Month by sharing these stories and continually supporting Black-owned businesses. If you haven’t watched it, check out the pilot episode; it’s truly one of our favorite projects we've produced. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gM95FGDK
