T4RAIL IT-SI project kick-off meeting On Tuesday 28th May 2024 the T4RAIL IT-SI project partners met in Venice for the first face-to-face meeting to agree on the next steps in the project implementation. The meeting was crucial for all project partners (RFI, SŽ-Infrastruktura d.o.o., Rail Cargo Carrier Italy Srl, Rail Cargo Slovenija d.o.o., Università degli Studi di Trieste, Univerza v Ljubljani - Fakulteta za pomorstvo in promet, InRail S.p.A., SŽ-Tovorni promet d.o.o.) and associated partners (Mediterrean Rail Freight Corridor, Baltic-Adriatic Rail Freight Corridor, RailNetworkEurope, Union Internationale des Chemins de fer, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia) to get to know each other in person and to coordinate upcoming activities.  The aim of the T4RAIL IT-SI project is to promote the technological innovation and digitalisation in the railway sector in order to improve cross-border rail connections between Italy and Slovenia, making local companies more competitive and sustainable, increasing job opportunities, reducing the environmental impact of transport and improving cross-border territorial cohesion. The meeting started with an opening speech by the representative of the INTERREG VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme Authority, followed by a presentation by RFI, as lead project partner, of the work plan, main deliverables and deadlines, which were discussed by all partners. The financial and administrative rules at project and programme level were explained with the support of the INTERREG VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme Authority, in particular regarding the preparation of project implementation reports and cost eligibility. The meeting also focused on the correct implementation of the project’s communication and visibility activities based on the Interreg Programme’s graphic design guidelines, which were presented by SŽ-Infrastruktura d.o.o. as the project’s communication manager. All partners agreed on the establishment of the project’s Steering Committee and jointly discussed the terms of its Rules of Procedure, which will be formally adopted by written procedure. Cross-border cooperation is a crucial factor for the success of the T4RAIL IT-SI project, as the partnership provides complementary expertise and enables the partners to rely on each other to play their part in achieving the planned objectives all together. The #Italian infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (#RFI) launched a tender for 117 million euros, co-financed by #Switzerland, to boost intermodality in northeastern Italy. Reactivation of the Central Rail Corridor in Uruguay Recently, our subsidiary DB Engineering & Consulting sponsored the 2024 Metro Rail Summit in Medellin, Colombia. Our attendees engaged in many insightful exchanges, sharing perspectives on key challenges and opportunities shaping the region’s transit landscapes.   A notable highlight was the contribution by Carsten Puls, DB E&C´s Executive Director Latin America, who had the opportunity to speak about the reactivation of the Central Rail Corridor in Uruguay and what our engineering experts have learned from a construction monitoring perspective. Drawing from our extensive expertise in railway operations, Carsten provided valuable insights into the critical aspects of the project execution. His presentation focused on maintaining a critical and analytical perspective, identifying successes as well as areas for improvement to minimize delays and prevent cost overruns. One key takeaway of Carsten’s presentation is the concept of seamless mobility. It emphasizes efficient transport with minimal disruptions, ensuring a smooth journey for passengers and goods. Time lost in handling is not just an inconvenience, it’s a key factor in improving customer satisfaction and optimizing operations throughout the transportation network. The reactivation of Uruguay’s railway system bears immense significance for the country’s development. With benefits ranging from reduced emissions and noise pollution to improved air quality, this project marks important progress in Uruguay’s sustainable transport infrastructure. In addition, the Central Rail Corridor stands out for being one of the biggest partnership investments in the country’s history. #Poland is embarking on an ambitious #megaproject called the Central Communication Port (CPK), which promises to fundamentally transform the country’s #transportation system. The central element of the project is the #construction of a new international airport, Baranów, located near Warsaw. The Prime Minister of Poland confirmed at a press conference that after an audit of the project, the decision was made to #build this #strategically important facility. The new #airport will be integrated into the national #transport network via #highspeed #railway lines, forming a Y-shaped corridor connecting Warsaw, Łódź, Poznań, and Wrocław. This will reduce travel time between major cities to 100 minutes, providing convenience and speed in #travel across the country. The project also includes the procurement of more than 100 dual-system high-speed #electric #trains, emphasizing the high level of modernization of the Polish railway network. Instead of the previously planned radial lines leading to the airport, a national railway network model was chosen, allowing for a more efficient and flexible transportation system. The new Baranów airport will become the most modern in #Europe due to its integration with railway and #road #infrastructure. It is planned to be connected with various regions of Poland not only by high-speed railways but also by a developed network of roads, significantly simplifying access to it from any point in the country. The CPK program also includes the development of regional airports, which will contribute to the overall improvement of transport accessibility and connect remote regions with the central hub. The revised project required adjustments to the investment program schedule and #construction timelines. Land acquisition issues are expected to be resolved by the end of 2024, #building permits are planned to be obtained by 2026, construction completion is scheduled for 2031, and the airport’s #commissioning is set for 2032. Total construction costs for the airport up to 2032 will exceed 131 billion Polish zlotys (approximately 32.5 billion US dollars), making it one of the largest infrastructure projects in Poland’s history. This megaproject will not only enhance transportation accessibility within the country but also strengthen Poland’s position on the international stage as a key transport hub in Europe. The infrastructure development envisaged by the CPK program will be an important step towards the modernization and #economic development of Poland, creating new business opportunities and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

#Spain will allocate significant #investments to develop its railway #infrastructure, with €24.1 billion to be spent by the end of 2026. Operators ADIF and Adif AV plan to enhance both traditional and high-speed #rail networks. Half of the funds—around €12.1 billion—will be invested in the development of suburban and #freight lines, upgrading signalling, #electrification, and communication systems. By the end of 2024, approximately half of the planned investment volume will be utilized. The main part of the investments in freight #transportation is aimed at modernizing logistics hubs in major #transport centers such as Vicálvaro in Madrid and La Llagosta in Barcelona, as well as improving rail access to strategic ports like Sagunto, Castellón, and La Coruña. The allocated funds will also be used for the reconstruction of traditional #railway corridors, enhancing their capacity and efficiency. Adif AV will #invest €12 billion in the development of #highspeed railways. By the end of 2024, €7 billion will be utilized, with the remaining amount to be spent by 2026. Spain’s high-speed rail network, extending 4,000 km, remains the largest in #Europe. Plans include the expansion of lines in autonomous regions such as Cantabria and Extremadura and the #renovation of major stations, improving inter-regional connectivity. One of the key projects will be the modernization of the Madrid-Seville line, enhancing safety and comfort for passengers.

POLAND ANNOUNCED A TENDER FOR HIGH-SPEED RAIL TUNNEL Poland announces a tender for the construction of a high-speed rail tunnel in Łódź as part of program Centralny Port Komunikacyjny aka CPK. This contract is the third and largest for the CPK project, which is currently the most advanced railway initiative in Poland. The other two contracts are already under construction in central Łódź. Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak highlighted the importance of the tunnel, noting that it is a vital component of the planned 'Y' route, which will connect Warsaw, CPK, Łódź, Wrocław, and Poznań with high-speed rail. He emphasized that this investment is crucial for the future operation of the Polish rail system and represents a major step toward the goal of a 100-minute Poland. The tunnel will be excavated using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with a diameter of about 14 meters and will stretch approximately 4.6 kilometers. It will include two tracks to accommodate trains traveling in both directions. This project will mark the longest and widest underground railway crossing ever built in Poland using this method.
