#COTEDIVOIREMININGNEWS The Alliance of Sahel States (AES), formed by Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, aims to strengthen mutual defence and economic cooperation. Côte d'Ivoire is taking inspiration from these initiatives by considering a revision of its mining code to boost state revenues. Mines Minister Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly has announced this reform to better exploit resources such as gold, coltan and lithium. Although these legislative revisions may create tensions with foreign investors, they are aimed at maximising state profits. #AES #CôtedIvoire #CodeMinier #RessourcesNaturelles #Investissements To read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dt2xc55R

#MALIMININGNEWS The mining sector in West Africa is undergoing a major transformation with reforms aimed at strengthening governance, transparency and local integration. In Mali, a new mining code and local content law have been adopted, while Guinea is imposing a reference price for bauxite and local content requirements. Burkina Faso and Senegal have also introduced audits and controls to improve transparency. Measures have been taken to assert national sovereignty over mining resources, including the requisitioning of gold and the cancellation of mining licences. Despite these reforms, the sector continues to face challenges, such as low national employment rates, requiring rigorous implementation of local content obligations. #WestAfrica #MiningSector #MiningReforms #Governance #Transparency #LocalIntegration #Mali #Guinea #BurkinaFaso #Senegal #NationalSovereignty #LocalContent #SustainableDevelopment #responsibleInvestment Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dXKKexfC

At Resource Matters, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the potential lifting of U.S. sanctions on Dan Gertler, the most known Israeli mining magnate the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Our Director, @JeanClaudeMputu shared insights in Le Monde about the implications of this development for the DRC's rich mineral resources. The DRC, the world's leading producer of cobalt and a major player in copper production, possesses strategic minerals vital for the global energy transition. However, Gertler's history of corruption raises serious concerns about governance and accountability in the mining sector. Jean Claude, recognized as a 2023 Anti-Corruption Champion by the U.S. State Department, emphasizes that Gertler's recent legal actions—specifically the withdrawal of lawsuits against the Israeli newspaper Haaretz —seem to be part of a strategy to persuade the U.S. government to ease sanctions. This highlights the urgent need for 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 in how natural resources are managed in the DRC. As discussions around these sanctions unfold, it is crucial to ensure that any 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 🔗 We invite you to read the full article in Le Monde for a deeper understanding of these pressing issues. #ResourceMatters #DRC #Mining #Cobalt #Transparency #JeanClaudeMputu #LeCongoNestPasAVendre #StrategicMinerals #AntiCorruption https://lnkd.in/dgu5mnzz

The #Gabon #France Economic Forum is being held today in Paris. Among the many issues at stake is the development of value chains and logistics corridors in the #extractive sectors. Local transformation, more stringent regulation of trading and the establishment of transport and distribution networks are key to developing the #petroleum and #mining value chain in Gabon and in the sub-region. I look forward to partners with similar interests aligning their capacities through this Forum to conceive and get off the ground projects that will not only have an economic impact but also reconcile with Gabon’s sustainable development goals. https://lnkd.in/ed-Pd9ka

Two weeks ago, the Council of Ministers of #Gabon adopted several legal instruments to better regulate the #mining sector. Apart from Decrees establishing various new ministerial departments, the Council also adopted a Decree establishing the regime for sovereign minerals such as #gold, #silver, #uranium, #diamonds, #gems and #rareearth elements. This Decree implements the general principles on strategic #minerals set forth in the Mining Code, which includes the establishment of additional operational or Gabonization requirements. Interest in Gabon’s mining sector continues to be high and the development of mining infrastructure appears to be a key priority for the country. #mirandaalliance #africa #extractive #mines
