It’s time for another #TravelTuesday with Energy Global!   This Tuesday, we’re travelling to Québec.🇨🇦   Hydro-Québec has announced the start of the draft design ahead of the project to overhaul Coteau-1 and Coteau-3 dams, which are nearly a century old, to ensure their long-term operability and increase their capacity in compliance with current standards.   Potential project scenarios will be assessed during the draft design, which will be completed in 2026. The following phases will encompass the preliminary work and then the rehabilitation itself, which is expected to start in 2029.   The draft design will establish the optimal course of action, which will include: - Consulting local Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to develop a project that integrates their goals. - Coordinating all studies required to define the technical content, constraints, permitting requirements and impacts on the environment. - Developing of the project execution strategy. - Identifying and managing project risks. Another round of storage-Lego? Great video on the off-loading of our storage containers at a project site. And yes, #energystorage is a simple as it looks.   This video comes from the Statkraft Greener Grid Park in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It shows the arrival and positioning of our Fluence Cubes.   In the video you can see how storage projects sites work these days: Groundwork and site preparation, including concrete slabs are done before the equipment arrives. The equipment comes ready to be connected but Cubes, but also inverters, which you can see in the video as well. The Cubes are probably fresh off the ship in Glasgow, brought to project site on a flatbed and lifted in place. Batteries are already installed inside, Cubes are anchored and connected and ready to be commissioned. Of course, there are many steps, but in the end, it is simple and scalable as Lego.   The energy transition with renewables and storage is so successful because it is so simple. Storage project with rarely any time or cost run-overs, same as renewables, because all is small and modular. You take a small piece and repeated multiple times.   So why is this important? I have to think about the book on How big things get done (by Prof. Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner). If you haven't read it yet, you should! It's about careful planning and fast delivery based on modular projects with repeatable working steps. And this is what you see in this video. Project sites accelerate, if project steps are repeatable.   Well, we’ve delivered more than 25.000 of our Cubes globally, so we repeated this many, many times and are quite good at it 😉 A quick note on the project, it is special for many reasons: 💡 The project was awarded under the Stability Pathfinder II program and will support the power network by providing inertia and short circuit power. Both services become more important, as power systems increase the instantaneous share of renewable penetration.   💡 The project uses grid-edge technology, including innovative inverters (Friedrich PIONTEK-HELMS might spot the logo). However, advanced services such as inertia are not just about using grid-forming inverters but are about the overall plant design and controls. Good inverters are the start, but not the end to getting these projects into the ground.     Other fun facts on this project: Neilston was Fluence's 27th project contracted or delivered in the UK and Ireland. Across those markets we have now more than 2 GWh projects contracted or operational.

Recently Harbour Energy put forward a project proposal for a new Viking CCS onshore Co2 transportation pipeline. This application was accepted and the project will be able to begin development after it has gone through an examination which will be performed by the UK Planning Inspectorate. Harbour Energy has announced its plans to create onshore pipelines which will act as a new kind of infrastructure designed for carbon capture technology. The article below shows how projects involving capturing and storing carbon are becoming increasingly popular as a way of effectively reducing carbon emissions. Now that this process has the option to transport the carbon, new possibilities have been created around where carbon created in one area could be stored in another area. This also increases a location's chance of decarbonising, if they do not have the capability of storing captured carbon themselves. Sosteneo Infrastructure Partners, part of the Generali Investments ecosystem, has partnered with Edison, Saipem, and Invitalia (via its subsidiary DRI D'Italia) on a major project to decarbonise Italy’s largest energy and steel hub as part of the “Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley” initiative. The initiative involves a bespoke solution composed of 260MW of solar PV generation capacity and 160MW of electrolysis capacity to produce green hydrogen for use in direct reduced iron production plants, which will decarbonise the steel-making process at large steel plants and mills in the Puglia region of Italy. The initiative will be delivered through a special purpose company, Puglia Green Hydrogen Valley S.r.l., which was originated by Alboran Hydrogen S.p.A.. Sosteneo, on behalf of clients, will take a 40% stake in the special purpose company alongside co-shareholders Edison (45%), Saipem (10%), and DRI (5%; subject to obtaining the necessary ministerial authorisations). In the past, in the first years of developing renewable energy projects, the procedures were very difficult and time-consuming. But nowadays, the continuous and rapid development of technology, as well as the expertise of people in this field, make the construction and management of projects much easier and more efficient. The construction sector is looking towards renewable energy systems such as wind, solar and geothermal, as a means of improving energy efficiency and minimising its carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy systems into construction activities, project managers can reduce their dependency on traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear. In addition to integrating these into the building designs, renewable energy systems can also be used to power construction sites. Solar panels, for instance, can be installed on rooftops to generate electricity, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering long term utility costs. This can be especially beneficial for construction sites within remote areas or in areas which have limited access to traditional energy sources. To further support the sustainability outcomes aimed for by renewable energy sources, the construction sector can introduce the use of sustainable building materials such as wood, recycled steel and bamboo, which can support the buildings receive sustainability certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Established Environmental Assessment Method). The use of renewable systems in construction has a range of far reaching benefits that extend beyond the energy savings that are experienced within the projects and buildings themselves. The use of these system can support reductions in the carbon footprint of the development projects in question, thus contributing to emissions savings which support global climate change goals. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources can also improve the reliance and resilience of construction sites as they can leveraged as a form of backup power during emergencies. For instance, batteries or pumped hydro storage can be used as substitute for primary power sources during a power outages to ensure that buildings do not experience experience downtimes. This ensures that operations can be maintained and prevents safety hazards. A further benefit afforded by the introduction of renewable energy systems in the construction sector is that it enables job creation and stimulates economic growth. 🔎 With a length of more than 764 kilometers covered under the surface of the earth and the sea, the Viking Link project has been awarded since the design phase the title of the longest electric interconnector in the world. But for the record to be true it had to wait for 29 December 2023, the date of the beginning of commercial operations. To give news of the operation is National Grid, an energy company operating in the United Kingdom and the United States, and has realized the work in a joint venture with the Danish TSO Energine. The infrastructure connects the electrical systems of Great Britain and Denmark, linking the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire with the Revsing substation in southern Jutland. The objective of the project? Allow more efficient use of renewable energy, access to sustainable electricity production and increased security of electricity supply.
