TAG director Matilda Martin recently spoke at the Cambridge International Symposium about the influence of Serious and Organised Crime (SOC) on political finance, corruption and democracy. Among other issues, Matilda discussed how in many developing countries political power remains deeply connected to personal and group wealth acquisition, and societies are deeply rooted in patronage networks which may be ‘corrupt’ in the western sense but which align with centuries old social organising principles. In these contexts, historical examples suggest that rather than seeking to establish ‘best practice’ political process it may be more useful to focus on equal economic empowerment and equitable wealth distribution, creating the enabling pressures for a locally-specific democratic culture to emerge. Likewise, building the capacity of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute corruption can have major repercussions for the delicate balance of power, and should be viewed not as a purely technical but an acutely political interventions. If you would like to hear more about TAG’s counter-corruption and SOC work, please get in touch.

I had fun yesterday participating in a panel discussion as part of the World Economic Forum Institutional governance and Strategic Intelligence Horizon Scan Series discussing how to navigate compliance amidst global uncertainty. I was in good company with Patrick Rowe and Togrul Allaverdiev with the panel moderated by Nivedita Sen from the World Economic Forum. The discussion built on the work we did within the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) at the World Economic Forum on identifying pivotal issues that businesses and chief compliance officers in specific must grasp in order to thrive amid the dynamic currents of today's business and socio-economic environment. https://lnkd.in/ee-UBkDe #integritymatters AtkinsRéalis

Peter Maurer at #WEF24 on how behavioural science helps us to better understand and tackle corruption: "Institutions, laws, norms and processes to combat corruption and strengthen governance are important. But we also have to ask what informs behaviour. Behaviour is not only informed by the threat of being punished... it is structured and informed by informal codes in societies, by the way people interact with each other, by leaders setting the tone, by identity. Opening that behavioural science lens opens new opportunities for action on anti-corruption and governance." INTERNATIONAL DAY OF DEMOCRACY | 15 SEPTEMBER 2024 Democracy thrives on the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. However, these foundations are increasingly threatened by pervasive corruption, which erodes trust in public institutions, undermines the rule of law, and distorts the allocation of resources, all of which are essential to a healthy democracy. When leaders and public servants engage in corrupt practices, it weakens the very fabric of our democratic systems, leading to disenfranchisement, inequality, and disillusionment among citizens. As we observe the International Day of Democracy on September 15, we should recognise that the fight against corruption as essential to preserving democratic values. The establishment of the International Anti-Corruption Court (IACCourt) would play a pivotal role in this effort, holding corrupt leaders accountable on a global scale and reinforcing the structures that uphold democracy. By promoting transparency, holding leaders accountable, and supporting anti-corruption initiatives, we can safeguard democracy and ensure that it serves the people it was designed to represent. Let us renew our commitment to building a world where democracy is not just a concept but a lived reality, free from the corrosive effects of corruption.
