Nonprofit Interim Executive and Management Consultant guiding organizations through change and transition | Executive Mentor | Board Director
When I was starting out as a newbie CEO, 'board governance' seemed like something far down the list of priorities to wrangle through, to be done off the side of my desk when time and necessity allowed. Then Dr. Sharilyn Hale, C.Dir joined our board. Sharilyn showed me the power of good governance and it's alignment with good strategy to deliver results. And that while governance is serious business, it can be FUN too. Who knew?! If you are a newbie CEO, an experienced Director or just someone trying to take your governance to the next level, check out Sharilyn's new Watermark PowerBoard Program below. Chances are good she will transform your view of governance too, and SO much more.
Working in or with charities and foundations my whole career, I see governance not just about the bad things it can prevent (although this is critical), but about the wonderful things it can make possible – in organizations, communities, teams, and families! This inspires my work through Watermark Philanthropic Counsel to ensure boards have the kind of support that will help move them forward. To help you get what you need for the governance you want, I’m pleased to launch the Watermark PowerBoard Program for public and private foundations and operating charities. With our Board Kick-Start, Board Check-Up, Board Builder and Board Wizard streams, we create pathways from where you are to where you want to go – learning, growing and having fun along the way. I've been in a bit of a startup bubble 🙈 the last few years, so last night it was refreshing to be immersed in a new community, filled with fresh faces and ideas (courtesy of Queensland Gives by Queensland Community Foundation). There's something special about being in a room surrounded by people who selflessly dedicate so much of their time and energy to helping support others and the environment. I've been thinking a lot recently about where there are potential intersections between the approach and focus of #NFPs and the world of #startups and #venturecapital. While many would probably see them as 'chalk and cheese' (one focused on financial returns at all costs, while the other forgoes financial gain altogether), they share quite a few common traits: 1️⃣ Commonly inspired by a personal experience of the founder 2️⃣ A vision for a better way/ better future and a fierce passion for making this change while others might be ok with the status quo 3️⃣ Require entrepreneurial spirit and smarts to start and survive I think these common traits make them ripe for more collaboration and sharing of insights, yet it's quite rare to see Australian tech startups partnering meaningfully with not-for-profits who share similar goals or values. Why is this? 🤔 I'd love to know more about examples of this happening. If exploring how the NFP/ philanthropy world can better partner and intersect with the startup/ VC world tickles your fancy, I'd love to hear from you! 💌
