UMUSA RECEIVED SOME NOT SO GREAT NEWS 😿 We have been helping Umusa, a New York kitty, since October with his chronic allergies and treatment for his asthma. Unfortunately, after 3 months on Apoquil, Umusa was still itchy. Umusa was referred to a veterinary dermatologist. An immunology blood test showed Umusa is allergic to dust mites, fleas, and some types of grass and trees. Umusa's dermatologist suggested immunotherapy, but because Umusa has been losing weight, she suggested running bloodwork to check Umusa's liver & kidney function, a urine culture, and a blood pressure check before changing medications. Unfortunately, Umusa was diagnosed with moderate renal disease; his veterinarian has postponed changing his medications for now, prescribed him Hills prescription k/d food, and suggested a water fountain to encourage Umusa to drink more water. We had some funds left over from our Secret Santa fundraiser to purchase a water fountain for Umusa, which will help with the cost of his prescription food. This is not the news we hoped for; Umusa can continue to live a good quality of life with the best medical care possible. His mom is trying to limit his exposure to allergens and said that despite everything, Umusa seems happy; his whiskers have grown back, and he loves his new food! If you would like to help with Umusa's prescription food cost, please donate here: https://lnkd.in/eQkmbbtD #fortheloveofalex #umusa #newyork #kitty #cat #renalhealth #allergies #catlife #qualityoflife #catlovers #catmom #catsarefamily #catphoto pets #charity #catoftheday😻 #meowing

Furry companions hold a special place in many hearts, but for those with allergies, the dream of having a pet can be elusive. Animal allergens are present on fur, in saliva and urine, and they are easily dispersed into the indoor environment and readily detectable in household dust. Current estimates state that in the general adult population, sensitization to pets affect 10 – 14% of individuals in Europe and the United States, bearing a high risk of developing clinical symptoms such as allergic rhinitis or asthma. Specific cat, dog, or horse breeds are often advertised as hypoallergenic, and patients are seeking advice from clinicians. Dr Christiane Hilger, Group Leader of Molecular and Translational Allergology in the Department of Infection and Immunity at the Luxembourg Institute of Health, couples a recently published review article with her original research to delve into the intricate world of hypoallergenic animals. The collaborative effort of the original research, conducted together with Monika Prof. Dr. Raulf from the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the German Social Accident Insurance (Bochum, Germany), Prof. Gunnar Dittmar from the Luxembourg Institute of Health, and two clinical centers, the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg, and the Odense Research Center for Anaphylaxis in Denmark, present new insights on so-called hypoallergenic horses, whereas the review summarizes current knowledge and research strategies that could offer hope for allergic patients. 🐾 August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month 🐾 🐶 Just like their humans, all pets get itchy sometimes, and common causes include insect bites, parasites, and allergies. 🐈 If your pet is itching more than normal, look for signs of fleas, swelling, inflammation, red bumps, or sores caused by excessive scratching or licking. 😺 Because excessive itching in pets can be a sign of more serious problems such as allergies or parasites, make an appointment with your veterinarian if the problem doesn’t go away. #pumpkininsurance #petinsurance #floridapets #floridaveterinarian #pumpkinpets

5 Home Remedies for Pet Allergies While these home remedies may temporarily relieve your pet's allergies, they are not substitutes for proper diagnosis and treatment. For a definitive solution, visit Sugarland Animal Hospital for a comprehensive consultation with our experienced veterinarians. Here are 5 home remedies you can try alongside a vet visit: 🐶 Oatmeal Bath: Oatmeal's anti-inflammatory properties can soothe itchy skin. Prepare a lukewarm oatmeal bath, let your pet soak for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. 🐶 Apple Cider Vinegar Spray: Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 3 parts water in a spray bottle. Apply sparingly to affected areas, avoiding eyes and open wounds. 🐶 Coconut Oil: Apply this natural moisturizer topically to dry, itchy patches. Use virgin coconut oil and apply in moderation. 🐶 Probiotics: These supplements may help support your pet's gut health, indirectly improving skin allergies. Consult your vet for dosage recommendations. 🐶 Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines can offer temporary relief, but always consult your vet before giving any medication to your pet. Remember, these remedies are temporary solutions. Please schedule an appointment with Sugarland Animal Hospital so our veterinarians can diagnose the cause of your pet's allergies and recommend the best long-term relief plan for their well-being. Sugarland Animal Hospital is committed to providing top-quality care for your furry friend.
