I help travel & tech companies grow revenue via organic marketing channels | Co-founder @ Dune7 | Startup advisor | Travel industry connector
A question I've always pondered: Is it beneficial for travel tech founders to have travel industry backgrounds? Or is it better to build solutions through a fresh pair of eyes? Those new to travel are often naive, to no fault of their own, and try to solve problems that don’t exist, or those where the existing moat is too wide (trip planning anyone??) On the flip side, industry veterans can develop blind spots and an “echo chamber” mentality which is not conducive to innovation. Looking at some of the most successful travel startups, who had experience, who didn’t? ➡ Fred Lalonde, Hopper's cofounder, had a stint at Expedia and also launched an early OTA that was later acquired by Expedia. ➡ The guys at Airbnb had zero travel experience and just saw a problem that needed solving and used their design and tech chops to invent a category. ➡ Johannes and Tao Tao, cofounders at GetYourGuide, met at university and again, experienced a personal pain point and set out to solve it for the wider market. But neither had previous industry experience. Of course, this is a small sample size. Thoughts?
