As a senior manager, what do you prioritize more in a candidate: previous experience in the exact role or the possession of Transferable Skills? Reflecting on a leadership program I attended years ago, the prevailing view was that true leadership transcends specific domains, enabling a leader to guide various initiatives effectively, in contrast to a manager's focus on task execution. What are your thoughts on this distinction?

What managers can learn from history. Understanding the history of management offers more than just academic value—it provides practical skills that can enhance your career. By studying how management practices have evolved, you gain insights into the current business landscape and develop critical thinking skills by analyzing past successes and failures. Learning from historical leaders can improve your leadership abilities, and understanding the past helps you approach problems with a broader perspective, inspiring new ideas. A BRILLIANT BUNCH - AND A LOVELY LUNCH! This photo gallery captures the magic of last week's Good + Fair Employers Club Winter Leadership Lunch, where we proudly hosted early talent leads from the UK's best employers of young people, creating a forum for the most important and thought-provoking conversations happening in our space right now. Frankly, there was a LOT to discuss. From our morning check-in round, three popular themes emerged, for deeper dives over the rest of the day: 💡IMPROVING CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE – ON A BUDGET For various reasons, processes have become ‘clunky’ and young people have noticed. One G+F member: ‘Delays are opening up, drop-out rates are rising and inconsistencies are creeping in. It's not right if one person has two days to prepare, and another gets five.’ Solutions needn’t be expensive. What would it cost to give a timeline at the start, so students can plan accordingly? And could better assessments mean interviewing fewer people – making this stage just a ‘check’? 💡THE RISE IN REQUESTS FOR CANDIDATE ADJUSTMENTS A jump was noted in numbers requesting assistance with interviews and assessment centres (often due to anxiety or ADHD). Should teams ask for evidence of a diagnosis – or is that crass? As one member said: ‘We want to be sensitive, but we must also be fair. And resource is an issue - with the volumes we assess, we can’t offer bespoke processes and support for everyone.’ Another thorny question: Is it even *ethical* to tweak the process too much? One member said 50% of those who requested adjustments last year said it gave an unrealistic and unhelpful picture of the (pretty tough) role they later entered. Clearly this is a vital conversation to develop in 2024… 💡THE SQUEEZED MIDDLE: MANAGING SENIOR STAKEHOLDERS AND JUNIOR TEAM MEMBERS For some team leads, budget cuts had meant redundancies, and dips in morale. For others, new faces at senior leadership level had required an education drive (e.g. about the importance of apprenticeships). In addition, many G+F members are coping with the impact of broader transformation at an organisational level. As one said: ‘It doesn’t make sense to keep hiring the same people, when we know our future workforce requires a different skillset.’ Several are struggling to push the business to clarify the nature of their future demand – but they will persevere, as it needs to be done! Huge thanks to all our members who attended from Accenture BT Group Clifford Chance GSK Greene King NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) Santander UK Vodafone (Fabulous photos: Jas Lehal) * MEMBERS: Look out for the report capturing the content from the day, dropping into your inbox soon... * BIG EMPLOYERS: Work in an early talent team but not a G+F member yet? What are the Top 10 Highest paying soft skills? I found these in an interesting Blog by ZEIL. You can find the full list, along with their average salary in the blog (link in comments) The top 5 were: 1. Ability to work in a team 2. Being able to take charge. 3. Flexibility. 4. Problem solving. 5. Listening. This was an interesting list and I was obviously thrilled to see recognition for the importance of strong teamwork. I also think all these skills can be developed, so are you currently investing in these for your teams, or yourself? Hiring managers - would you agree with the list? Job seekers - Do you have any of these skills and if so, are you making making enough of them in your applications? #leadership #teameffectiveness #personaldevelopment
